So i bring tyson into the animal hospital where the vet works that i go to, to get his second round of puppy shots and get a checkup, the check up goes well, and she says he looks very healthy, than she gives him the DHLPP/C 2nd shot. he gives a little bark but seems ok, than he is just sitting on the vets table and her and i are talking and all of the sudden he makes a funny noise and we both look over and he just falls right over. so she quickly grabs him and puts her stethiscope to his chest and he looks right at me, and his eyes just roll back in his head, so she tells the assistant to get some kind of shot, she tells me he is having an alergic reaction and this shot should help him, so she gives it to him right in the butt, and it doesn't do anything so a minute later she asks for another shot that she says will boost his heart since it is slowing way down, so she gives that to him and we wait for a minute, and keeps listening to his heart, than she opens his mouth and his entire mouth is completly white and his tongue was kinda blue, at this point i totally thought he was dead, so she asks for another shot that she said was another kind of booster to get his heart going, this time she goes to his chest and and puts the shot in and pulls the plunger out and some blood goes in the needle than she pushes it in, and in like 20 seconds he starts moving again. so she keeps listenoing to his heart and than all of the sudden he throws up, and slowly he starts to look better and than he just starts itching himself, which was good because he was moving, but slowly you could see hives coming up all over his body, so the vet gave him a shot of diphenhydramine, she said it is just generic benadrile, so i stayed at the vets for another hour and a half, and they stayed open late just for me. tyson got rid of his hives about 3 hours later, the vet also gave me some diphenhydramine pills to take home with me.
quite a day, very scary, i was sure he was gone, but now he is sleeping on my lap as healthy as he was yesterday. the vet said very, very few dogs have a reaction to the shots but some do, i guess just like some babies can have a bad reaction to their baby shots, so i guess i am really glad i did some research in finding a good vet because i totally think she saved his life. she asked how he was after his first shots and i said he slept alot but didn't seem sick at all, and she said that he probably had a reaction but not a very bad one, but it did set his body up for having a really bad reaction the next time, kinda like when i get stung by a bee, every time it gets worse and worse. so i guess next time he gets his shots we are gonna do some different things.
after all was said and done i kinda thougth i was gonna get a big bill, but they gave me 20 bucks off, because they were feeling bad for me and little tyson, i think everybody in the place knew what was going on. not like the price mattered to me, i would have paid ten times this amount to keep the little guy alive.
so here is my bill in case any of you guys are wondering what all the shots where he got.

Oh my goodness Mike! That is horrible! You poor thing - you must have been so worried and stressed out! I would have been terrified if I was in your position. Hug your boy extra tight tonight!

I'm not sure if your vet mentioned it to you but in a dog that has such a severe reaction to vaccination should not be vaccinated again. If it was my dog I would definitely not vaccinate ever again. Instead you can do titre level to check the level of circulating antibodies to keep track of your little buddy's immunity. Maybe next time you can talk to your vet about alternatives to vaccinations (titre levels, nosodes, etc).

Just a note - my vet messed up on my horse's meds and I got the whole bill for free ($200 and some). She gave him hallucinogenic instead of sedative when she was doing his teeth this spring. But I guess your vet didn't mess up - it was just a fluke thing so I suppose $20 is a nice gesture.

That was quite a scare! So glad he made it through it and thank goodness your vet was there.

Thank goodness you were at the vet and not at home with the dog so that something could be done immediately and your dog's life was saved. I know you must have been frightened to near death. I was scared reading your post.

I know how bad these allergic reactions can be. I rushed Maggie to the vet one morning after some sort of sting, when she hived up and swelled up so quickly she couldn't open her eyes and she started panting and was having a hard time breathing. It was one of the scariest moments of my life too. I ran every red light for 5 miles to get to the vet clinic to have her taken care of.

I hope that your dog recovers fully and there won't be a repeat of any sort like this again. I'm sure it was traumatic for the dog as well as you.

Scary - good thing this happened while you were still at the vet!! I had a bitch go into anaphylactic shock from a bee/wasp sting - she passed out cold, scared the he** out of us!!!

so i guess next time he gets his shots we are gonna do some different things.

!!!!!!!!

Tam is right - this dog should *not* be vaccinated ever again! Your vet even said every reaction will be worse than the previous one - well, worse than anaphylactic shock is dead. Not something I would risk!!

I am so glad your baby is now okay. Our girl Jersey had a reaction to the Lepto in the mixed vac shot and it cost us over $500 in emerg vet visits on the weekend it happened. It was terribly frightening! I agree with the others that you will want to be exceptionally careful in choosing what shots your dog has again.

Jersey got her rabies with no issue. I gave her the advantage flea control seperately, no issues. I gave her the first heartworm tablet, no issue. Now I do everything one at a time, just to be sure. I carry prednisone with me, as well as Benadryl. She has shown no long term effects so far from her reaction - but believe you me, she will never get a lepto shot again!

I've already asked my vet to price out titers for us for when the time comes - I don't plan on getting her shots unless it is really really needed. Good luck with your baby and big kisses from us!

You're vet will probably recommend getting an antihistimine inj. before his next vaccines. This works but I would recommend at least titering him before, to make sure he even needs the vx. Or, ask your vet if they have idividual vx for DHLPP and corona. They probably won't but if they do, that will be a much safer way for him to recieve the inj. Also, do only one vx at a time from now on. Even if it's for lyme or bord, doing them all singlely will help reduce the chances for him having a reaction. I'm so sorry you had to go through this. And I bet you thougt your boy was special before, now he's a miracle baby! If you're wondering I can tell you what all those were for if you still don't know. :)

thanks for all the support, you don't relize just how much you love these little furbabies until you see one of them dying in your hands, tyson is back to his normal self, BUT last night he peed on the floor twice, once around 12 and again around 3, both times i woke up, (i really don't think i slept at all last night, always had one eye open watching him) but he has not peed in the house in like 2 weeks now, so i thought he was pretty well potty trained, but he went outside in the morning and i just came home for lunch and he did not pee in his crate and he went as soon as he went outside, so i think last night was a mixture of 1. all the different medications in his body, and 2. he seemed so thirsty last night that i just let him drink and drink and drink, something i usually don't let him do right before bed, but i couldn't say no to him last night. so i will be doing a lot of research into different ways i can medicate him, i do live out in the country and he does go for walks with me out in the woods, so i want he to be medicated, but not if we have to go through all that again, so thanks for all your advise, and feel free to give me some more.

I learned the hard way too. Luke had a reaction to the multi vacc. He also had Lyme, and on the second visit, (with the multi) he had a second Lyme. I TOLD the vet that I didn't want the Lyme... (we don't see this vet anymore).
The Lepto and Lyme are in the same family. My guy had a double whammy all in one day, when he was still reacting to his first Lyme, but it was sooo subtle that I didn't really know he was allergic. He was sleepy and the lump at the site didn't go away. I asked the vet and she said, "It was normal." But I didn't buy it. (3 weeks later the lump was still there?) That was why I said NO Lyme.
After all this I contacted my breeder and she said NOT to vaccinate again. He will pee a lot until it's out of his system. Luke wet himself in his sleep! Several nights in a row. That is normal. But it resolved in a week.
If you (and your vet) feel that there are things in your area of the country that should be vacinated for, do individual shots (titers are best).
Here, Lyme is a huge risk, but with my guy, the reaction will kill him, so NO shots. Lepto isn't a big issue here, so no shots at all.
I'm just doing rabies (by law).
Isn't it funny how we can fall so deeply in love with our furbabies. Even when you think you know how deeply you love them, when they are sick, or helpless in our arms... it's a whole new level of love huh?
Oh.. and all the visits, the shots, the next day "emergency" when he got hives.. then the new vet, overnight I.C.U. for him... $645. But I'd pay any amount.
:)
