AKC sells out to puppymillers

I have to say I thought they were acting like it before, but truly didn't believe they'd go as far as they have.

They started their recent Fall Delegate meeting with a proposed amendment to bar delegates who opposed AKC objectives. They said it would help to keep out the animal rights activists, etc. Makes sense (and after you read the rest you'll see why it was important to get it passed)

Then later they buried in the Treasurer's report a new deal with PETLAND pet stores to let them market puppies under the AKC banner and urge their customers to register their new bought pups with AKC!

Delegates objected -- and were told the deal was done, it was the wave of the future, and if we don't want $75 entry fees, leave it alone. The AKC attorney admitted he hadn't even READ the contract!

This is a total disgrace and possibly the precise nail in the coffin that the animal rights activists have been waiting for.

I almost posted this earlier, but I didn't want to create a huge outrage on here.

I am disgusted...we need a better registry. AKC is money-mongering and clueless.

Puppymillers and BYB's now just have one more to add to their supporters.

Pure bred dogs my behind...they didn't check before on what came through their registry...they definitely won't now.

I don't know if I agree that they "sold out", or that this is really all that outrageous. AKC already allows the registration of puppymill and backyard bred puppies. They've never really been a strong voice of ethical breeding. They are a business, no different than any other business. They are most certainly not an institute of high moral standards.

The community of ethical breeders just have to continue to self police and educate the consumer.

The problem becomes a moral dilemma for the fancy at this point.

The AKC is taking more and more steps, defining itself as a registry body with no regard for what is actually BEING registered. Which is in direct conflict with what WE as a fancy are trying to do. We are trying to bring the breeds to meet their standards (I am not just talking about boxers here). We are trying to improve the health of our dogs and we are taking steps to try and ensure their healthy future.

That is NOT the AKC's goal...so why are we supporting them?

So why support such a business, as everyone is referring to it? I do realize that in order to register our dogs to show or register our litters...well, we all want to do it with the most 'reputable registery', but I am not sure that we can really consider the AKC very reputable at all anymore, can we?

They themselves have proclaimed that bottom line is profit. The rest just really isn't their problem.

I think for that sort of thing, you need to make a written complaint - and give the AKC a financial deposit. Sounds a bit wierd - until you consider that otherwise they could be inundated with false or malicious complaints ;) Yes, they can DNA profile a litter and you get your money back if the complaint is upheld.

I just thought they could look up the guys name and the male dog and possibly make them do a DNA test before giving papers for the pups??

In this instance, a DNA test would only work if the dead bitch was DNA profiled (which is unlikely) or one of her parents were DNA profiled. Without further info, all a DNA test would prove is that the "substitute" bitch and the stud dog were in fact the parents of the litter.

If there were permanent ID on record for the dead bitch that listed her reg number, then it could be proven that the papers didn't belong to the "substitute" bitch going that route.
