Maybe I'm missing it, but they all say too much protein in them for puppies.

I have a 8.5 month old so can he handle the extra protein? At what age does everyone switch over from puppy food.

Sarge is coming next week and he will be about 9 weeks.

I would really like a 6 star dry food for both ! Any suggestions. I'm Ok w/ 2 different bags, just wondering what I should do and where I'm going to find them from as there is not much in my area !

I don't think there is a 6 star for puppies because of the high protein content in all the grain free foods. I use Merrick Puppy Plate, which is a 5 star. I've also used Wellness Puppy and Innova Puppy, too.

I was tol Solid Gold had a good puppy food. My trainer like it because it was not chicken based. Who knows it is all very confusing. I feed raw but I am researching a good puppy kibble for my brother to feed his new pup. Not an easy task.

I have so far (my pup just turned 9 months old) fed Merrick, Canidae, and Innova. He has done very well on every single one of them. Once he is old enough for the higher proteins, we will also go with the 6 star foods, but I feel very confident with the 5 star foods he is eating now.

I use Taste of the Wild dog food and it is rated a 6 star. The Pacific Stream Canine Formula only has 25% protein, which would be fine for your puppy or your adult. It is a grain-free food also. :)

This site is so informative. When I got my boxer puppy, the Vet gave me a package of ProPlan recommending it for my puppy. On the second visit for shots, he asked me if I was still using it. They sales rep must have taken him to lunch. I'll be heading out for a quality food and shopping for a new vet tomorrow.

I think many of us keep taking our Boxers to the vets that recommend the lower quality foods, if we are satisified with the medical care. We just happen to ignore their advice on food selection.

And that's a very wise course :) Although we might like our vets to be experts in animal nutrition, the fact is that they are not (not because of being vets, anyway). They are doctors and nutrition is not usually a part of a veterinary degree. We don't expect our human doctors to also be nutritionist - we instead seek nutritional advice from nutritional specialists. I'm not sure why we expect vets to be experts in fields we wouldn't expect human doctors to be... but we shouldn't ;) And not being experts in nutrition does not detract from their medical knowledge.

Of course, it doesn't mean that all vets are ignorant about nutrition. Just because it's not taught in depth in veterinary schools doesn't preclude any vet from pursuing further education. Sadly, many of the courses available are actually run by the pet food manufacturers...

hah! our new vet also recommended a bad kibble for our pup. i guess she's not the only one after all!

i'm so confused on this subject matter. what's wrong with chicken based kibble for puppies? i'm currently feeding the canidae chicken meal for my 8 week old pup... should i not be? she seems to like it.

When I took Buster in a few days ago for a urinalysis, they discovered he probably has allergies do to some spots he's been licking and scratching, and because of some redness in his eyes and ears. And what food did he recommend you ask..........SCIENCE DIET FOR ALLERGIES!!!!!!! I about passed out, but I was polite. I told him I just ordered some Solid Gold Barking at the Moon and was going to give that a go since it is grainless and only two protein sources. Of course, he didn't know what it was but said if it didn't work I could always come try that because he has gotten several people to use it for allergies. I love him as a vet, but like gmacleod said, they are definately not trained in nutrition, and unfortunately most of them don't want to listen to us common folk tell THEM about dog nutrition.
