Our 11 years & 3 days old "Emma" has in the last two weeks shown episodes once or twice every day or two where she will come to careful standstill, twitch (whole body) then collapse forward to the human equivalent of her knees. Her hind end usually also gives out simultaneously. She keeps her chin level and does not lose consciousness. She then climbs back to her feet within 2 seconds and carries on (carefully for the first few seconds mind you). In the park however she can still rip around at near her alltime top speed playing tag with her 5 yr old boxer brother without incident.

I will be talking to our vet today but would appreciate any input from those who have seen this scenario before.

Thanks so much kidney bean fans!

I am sorry to hear about these sudden episodes. Something to inquire about may ne the heart. Our peanut had cardiomyopothy and had fainting spells, most of the time she would fall onto her side, but there were a few times when she did what you dog seems to be doing. Emma very well may not be "fainting" but at least you should go to doc armed with possible questions. Peanut never lost consiousness and sometimes she would flail about and others she would twitch and kind of catch herself by the time we rushed to her. Sh ewould be back to normal very quickly and was still fast fast fast! Please keep us posted and I will send postive vibes your way for your dear Emma. It is probably not what is going on with emma, but the more info the better.

Positive update

Hello everyone. Thnaks to some positive thoughts on the part of some caring strangers on this site as well as our family's, we are able to state that our dear Emma is suffering from having a big heart (no real surprise....wink wink). X-rays and an ultrasound revealed an enlarged heart so she is on a heart med for 28 days. She has a week left of that then in for a check-up. Our vet states that it is realistic to hope for 2-3 more years w/o a major heart attack if her new med(s) appear to be working.

Thanks again everyone!!

Wow, so glad to hear the good update! I hope that when you go back in, everything appears to be normal!

I am having the 'enlarged heart' problem with Asia right now but our prognosis isn't as positive ... they are thinking cardiomyopathy! :(

Anyhow, keep us updated on how Emma is if you can! *Wishing for the best* :)

We always told ourselves that it was no wonder Peanut had an enlarged heart. She just loved everyone so very much, as they all do, and her heart was that much bigger for it. But it was not fair that it has to make them sick :-(

She too had enlarged heart and CM and was diagnosed through xrays ekg and ecg. when she was first diagnosed (november of 2003) the vet had her o n sotalol for a month, then a recheck and new ekgs to determine if she would stay on it. During the time that she was off the meds she had another fainting episode, so we put her back on and she lived on the sotalol quite normally until the end (this february at age 6) when her heart just could not do it anymore. We helped her to the RB on 2-15-05 when she let us know it was time, and it only became obvious in her last month. I know other people who have dealt with this and their babies have lived even longer after diagnosis, more than a few years, so please dont think the worst (i know its hard not to). give emma lots of loves from us, and we will send you lots and lots of postive energy and keep you in our prayers. we all know how hard this is, and BW is an amazing place to come for support. keep us posted. hang in there pretty old emma girl....
