Does anyone know if you can do anything to get rid of skin yeasst infection with out going to vet, or is it a must to get meds or shots?

For the first bout of it, go to the vet and get it diagnosed. Hugo gets what is basically a yeast infection in his feet during our rainy springs. Once we knew what to look for, (and our vet ok it) we started using monostat cream to clear it up. Works like a charm!

But...you need to see the vet first. If it's a bacterial infection and not fungal you can actually accelerate the infection.

If your dog is getting yeast infections, then it is a good idea to take a look at what you feed it, and see if that isn't part of the cause. Dog foods containing a lot of cheap grains like corn and wheat are common culprits, as are those containing lots of sugar (beet pulp, molasses) or yeasts.

Ditching that sort of cheap food if you're feeding it, and adding pro-biotics such as natural yoghurt (the sort with live bacterial cultures and no sugar) to the diet can help. In the case of yoghurt, it can also be applied topically.

Battling Yeast Infection of skin

My poor girl has been dealing with this all summer. It started when she broke her foot, and it grew in her cast because of the hot humid summer. Well now she has it all the time on her neck and chest, a bit between her toes. I've gone to the vet, they gave us shampoo and recommended we bathe her every other day. (NOT happening with a boxer and mommy and daddy who work everyday) so its about 1x a week. It only helps at the surface. By the end of the week its back. I'm frustrated, called the vet, she says I just have a dog susceptible to yest problems (I don't agree) and prescribed a topical cream (I have to go pick it up) to help between baths. I'm going to change her food. I've printed out the recommendations from here. I've also added plain yogurt to her breakfast and dinner. She absolutley LOVES that. Nothing is more cute than a Boxers face covered in yogurt wiggling at you.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just want to rid her of this rather than treat the symptoms

Thanks-Roxy's Mommy!

Moxy Roxy-- is what your girl has called Malassezia Otitis? Im fairly sure thats what Ive been battling with my GSD....the vet hasnt diagnosed it but Ive dont some talking to some people and we've pretty much come up with the consencus thats that it is. A lot of it is caused by allergies so switching her food may be a good idea. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Shanz- What is Malassezia Otitis? I'll go do a google search on it. This is what her symptoms are, at first she had raised bumps on her neck and chest, spreading to her face. And discoloration around her neck (white fur-turned creamy brown) smelly too. I'm going to a petstore in our area that carries natural, and truely premium foods this weekend. Hopefully that will work. And if it does I'm going to tell the vet too. That topical treatment, JOKE. We are taking the meds back. The amount they gave us won't do anything for her!
