Well, here goes.
We left buddy at a kennel for the first time last weekend.
My husband agreed to let the guy feed him his diet and I knew better but didnt want to argue with the hubby, but again I knew better. So anyway we pick buddy sunday evening and hes a little thinner and has the runs, and is acting a little mad at us.
Ok, so sunday and monday he just layed around and drank a lot of water like he was dehydrated, but seemed to be ok.
Tuesday morn I get up at 6 am and notice that buddy isnt at the end of my feet on the bed as usual, hes curled up in the corner on a pillow next to my nightstand, I ask him if he needs to go potty and didnt get a response so I petted him and he just layed there so I took my shower and got dressed and asked him again if he needed to go but still no response so I thought man he just must be really tired, I knew that first time a kennel must have been stressful. Well when it was time to leave for work i wanted him out of my room cause I close all doors when gone. Well he wouldn't come out,, I had my son try and he ended up picking him up and carring him to livingroom, with buddy growling the whole time,,, I like man he is in pain, so I try to bribe him to get up with doggie treats and still nothing he wouldn't move. so me and my son take him to the vets 8 o'clock sharp, they ask questions like any new pestisides used anything differant , and only thing i could think of was the kennel, but didnt mention the food cause didnt think but did mention the runs, he said probably stress, anyway they wanted to keep him and do blood work, and called about an hour later and asked about ticks,, I said yes ok, the 8th thrusday my husband pulled off a 2 ticks off of buddys belly area,
well this is the first this season, he had maybe 3 or 4 last year we dont really have a prob. with ticks anyway so the vet said they checked his prostate, colon and other things and didnt find anything then his blood test showed high white blood cells, so he thought that he had lyme disease, but everything i asked him if lyme d. caused crippling like that he never really said yes. anyway they kept him over night and started aniboitics and we picked him up next day and he was all better, ( we did visit 2 the day before) I cant go with out seeing my baby, the weekend was hard enough. today he back to complete normal, anyway i was talking to guy at work who has had boxers before and said that one time he feed his boxer deer meat and cause (spelling) pancritis. and he had buddy's same symtoms, so does anyone know if the vet is just crazy, how can he just get all better from lyme D. and i didnt know that lyme D. caused crippling like that. sorry this is so long.

Hi sorry to hear your guy had such a rough time. Did the vet do an xray to rule out any fractured bones? Maybe that was the cause of him not wanting to move his back legs. Sorry I can't offer any other advice.

There are few people I would trust with my dogs' care, and your experience shows why. How is Buddy doing? I hope you have some answers and he is getting better.

Unfortunately there are too many kennels or boarding places that don't really care about the dogs other than as a source of income. We have had a lady who stays at our house if we are away and can't take our dogs. It doesn't cost that much more than boarding them, and they have constant supervision other than about four hours on the mornings when she works at a local breakfast restaurant.

Her husband leaves for just after seven, crates them and she returns at eleven. She walks Indy and Ava, plays with them, takes them for rides and treats them better than we do.

I think you need to find someone else to board Buddy with when you have to leave him. But it sounds like you know that.

Hope he's doing better. Let us know.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. It's so hard to see them so sick, and to have them stay at the hospital. I don't know much about how Lyme effects dogs. But in humans it causes severe joint pains, to the point where moving is just too painful. Antibiotics treatments are used and it does "cure" the symptoms for a while. Children and dogs are soo resilient! Even in pain they still act normal sometimes. Has the vet done blood tests for Lyme? Or, has your baby had the vaccine? (personally, I would never vaccinate for Lyme after learning what I did about it) Both the disease and vaccine causes the runs. You could also call the kennell and ask what was done. I've heard of some places taking it upon themselves to vaccinate dogs if they aren't vaccinated (or if the kennell lost the paperwork and aren't sure) . It's worth a call.
Good Luck and I hope all continues to go well!!

Oops, sorry I missed the part of your post that said he was all better. High white cell counts usually point to an infection. If that is the case, dramatic improvement is usually seen within twenty four hours. Was he running a temp when you brought him in?

When I was at the vet's with Indy a few weeks ago, someone came in with a dog that appeared to be paralyzed in his hind legs. They had to carry him in, and he was panting heavily from pain or stress.

They took him in the back, and it was the darndest thing. A short while later he came walking out like nothing had happened. Never did find out what it was, so it will remain one of life's mysteries.

Thanks for your replys.
Thanks tink, I did do a search here on boxer world on lyme D. but didnt come up with anything. I think I need to go to libary or book store and read up on lyme in dogs cause if he has it then I think he'll always have it. Anyway my so called wonderful vet didnt tell me anything.
Thanks thomas, I love all of your post you are always so helpful, I read your post alot on other subjects. Anyway It was the strangest thing for him to just get all better like that, we could not get him to move and he was in so much pain, but they did give him pain meds, right away and that prob. helped alot. I usually have my sister house sit and watch the dogs but she was out of town also that weekend.

Any way he is back to his normal self. He is sleeping with me again he actually kicked my leg last night for me to move it out of his way. ha ha too funny. He is also kidney beaning all over the place again. begging for us to share our food with him. yep back to normal, just like that.

They are just like our babies. Its so scary when something happens to them. Thanks guys

One time Samantha wouldn't get up and walk (in the middle of the night, of course). She was curled up in a corner of the room she never sleeps in, and when she acted like she couldn't walk, it scared me!!

So I call the emergency vet, and they said bring her over, it could be lots of things. So I carry this 60+ lb. dog to the car! When I got to the vets, they came out with a little stretcher, but Samantha managed to walk in then!

Anyway, it turns out she must have had a muscle spasm in her back. The vet thought she had a ruptured disk, but x-rays showed nothing. After a pain shot and muscle relaxant shot, she was back to her normal self again--in about 15 minutes! Nothing short of a miracle! I wanted one of those shots, too, because I didn't do my back any good carrying her to the car!:D

Hello,

Here is a bit of info on lyme disease.

I found this site by doing a search on a web search engine and put in the key phrase Lyme Disease in Dogs.

http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/lyme.html

About a year ago my mom's dog was diagnosed with lyme and being the big skeptic that I am I argued with the Vet that there must be somthing else wrong.

Of course mom is much wiser then I and she took the Vet's advice. Sure enough after being on the anitboitics a couple of day's, Sammy stopped limping.

O well hope this info helps.

Wow, that was definatly a great read. Learned alot.
I guess maybe my vet might know something.
The horrible joint pain is exactly what buddy had
so bad he growled and nipped at us if we tried to
touch him. His tick bites were on thrusday and friday we
put him in the kennel and then sunday and monday he was
trying to tell us he didnt feel good. My poor boy!!
Thanks for that web site,,,,,I book marked it.

I am so glad Buddy is doing better. My heart went out to you. Gosh, it is certainly a scary thing when our babies get sick.
