Will I ever get 8 hours of sleep again?

No matter what time I put Sonoma (5 months old) to bed in her crate, she's up between 4:30 and 5:00. I can't get her to sleep in. It's not necessarily that she has to go to the bathroom, sometimes she's just ready to play. (Ugh!)

It's not so bad during the week but on the weekends the occasional afternoon nap on the couch has turned into a necessity!

Help!

I have the same problem with Bella and she is 16 weeks. I may be starting a problem, but if I put her in the bed with me she will go right back to sleep and sleep until I wake her up!! Some mornings it is almost 8 before I can get her up. I know I shouldn't have started this, but she has no problem sleeping from 10:30 - 5:00, so I guess I can't complain. Besides, I certainly don't mind the snuggles!! lovicon

Oh! I remember those days. My boys are 9 and 10 months and sleep the entire night. They are on my schedule though, so tend to wake up at 3 AM to go potty (yes I work extremely early ;) ) However, on the weekends, as long as I don't stir too much, as I still wake up at that time w/o an alarm, they will happily sleep from 8 PM - 9 AM.

My Lucy was the same way, I put her in bed with us at a young age and she would sleep most of the night. Now adays I have to wake her up when I get up too make her go out. And yes she will sleep on weekends until I get up, even if i get up to let her out, she will do her business then come right back to bed :) It will eventually end, and work out to this. it took Lucy almost 8 months to a year old before this happened for me. Hang in there

it will get better. try tiring your dog out right before you out them to bed and let them out to relieve themselves for the night. this way they will be totally exhausted and hopefully sleep in. you can also try giving them a toy, such as a peanut butter filled kong, that will distract them and allow them keep busy in the morning. you can leave it in their crate the night before so that they can play with it the moment they wake up.

It does take some time to get them on *your* schedule. I try to empty their water bowls around 9pm. Then, they go potty one last time -whether they need to or not!- just as I go to bed. If we stay up and I dont take up the bowls - we are up in the middle of the night and Evie is 3 yrs now!! :D

Oscar's 9 weeks now, just a baby still. The lack of sleep was killing us, but finally (around Oscar's 8th week) we came up with a pretty good schedule for sleeping in. We placed his crate in our bedroom then during the night we'll take him out to relieve himself, then come 5:00 when he officially wakes up we leave him to play with his toys we placed in his crate. Then at 6 am when he's had enough of that and is just about to start whining we'll take him into our bed and he'll go right back to sleep until about 9 or even 10. It's kind-of screwy I know, but those extra hours of sleep really help. I will say this though, it took Oscar a little while to understand that it was only after 6 am he could climb into bed with us. Once there though, its a sure fire way of getting in some extra Zzzs on those days when you need them the most. Though in our cases the sleeping isn't exactly consecutive because he can't go the whole night without using the bathroom, but its better than nothing right?
Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to suggest is, if you don't mind, bring your pup in the bed with you in the mornings. Then maybe you'll be able to get a few more hours of sleep.

I was a big "No dog on the bed" promoter since my two kitties sleep on the bed religiously with us EVERY night...either on our feet or under the covers.
Anyway - we now bring Morgan into bed w/ us on the weekends if she wakes up before we want to! That makes the kitties run away though. They still don't like her :( But I love the cuddles ;)
It works great for us. At night when we say "Let's go to bed!" She walks into our room and goes around the bed to her "sleeping pillow" and her blanket and waits for one of us to cover her up.
Then - she sleeps all night and sometimes stays sleeping when I get up to get ready for work! Such a lazy bum.

We also let them get in bed with us so we can sleep in. Since we usually wake up at about 6am on weekdays Abby & Jack are trained to do the same and that works fine. On the weekends they will automatically want to get up and start playing around 6am. We figured out that if we let them get in bed with us at 6 when they wake up they will sleep another few hours so we get to sleep in.
