Our Cassius is 13 months old......We're getting the "baby bug". Question is, will getting a puppy mean that Cassius will devote all his time playing with the puppy and not his people as much? He has been part of the center of attention in our family, and is so attached to us. I would hate to break the bond we have. I need advise from my boxer friends

When we got Titus, Lexi did spend most of her time with him. She was completely fascinated with him. Throughout that time, she would still come to us for cuddles and such but it was after having a good play with Titus. After a few months, she wasn't so obsessed with him and started giving us attention more. It's a happy, healthy balance.

I made the decision to get a puppy when Oscar was already 4 years old. By then, Oscar had been the baby of the family and bonded quite a bit with BF and I (we got him when he was 6 weeks). We thought, he needs a playmate. So, we got Jasmine. Oscar wasn't happy with us at first but now he is warming up to her and still cuddles with us. It's actually kind of nice because, we each have a dog to cuddle with on the couch. I think your dog is young enough that it won't take him as long to adjust. I was very nervous bringing the new dog into the family knowing the bond Oscar had with us, and for awhile I thought I had made a huge mistake, Oscar wouldn't look at me or come to me when I called him, b/c I was the one that brougth this little one home. In the end everything is fine, Oscar got over it. I think it's a wonderful idea if you want another dog and you think your dog and the family can handle it. I would just advise you to consider it carefully before taking that next step. I told myself if I was going to get another dog it couldn't be passed Oscar's 4 year mark, because by then I think he would have been too jealous to deal. Anyway, sorry this is so long. I wish you the best!

getting a new puppy

I was very nervous about getting a new puppy as well. Bailey had been my one and only baby for 2 years. My dad has often said that I have "turned him into a wimp" because I baby him so much. I was afraid that Bailey would resent me and try to attack the puppy. I was only partially right. Bailey was very confused when I brought Beau home and barked and growled at him. Fortunately, within a few weeks, they became the best of friends. They even eat out of the other's food bowls and cuddle up together. However, I would suggest having another dog around for a little while (maybe dogsit for a friend) before you just spring another dog on him. In retrospect, I realize I should have done so.
