Why won't he kiss me? :(

I will try and make this short. Kirby is my baby, a huge suck! He is always with me. He sits with me, lays with me, follows me.. I think you all know what I am talking about!! But when it comes to kissing, he won't lick me!! He will lick my fiancee until no end, but even if I sneak my face in there, he turns away! I don't know what it is, I know he loves me, and I pay more attention to him then my fiancee. I feed him, brush him, change his water, well basically everything!! And I show him affection to no end, I just need to know why he won't kiss me! Can anyone help me???? :(

My behaviorist told me kissing..ie licking, is a submissive response. He also told me that my dog does not lick me due to one of two things. Either I have programed her not to or she is still not sure I am the leader of the pack. WE are going with I am not the leader of the pack but my husband is. She does not love me any less it is just that she reserves that type of affection for the pack leader. I am sure each case could be different but that is what I was told for our case. I am sure others here with more experience will have more insight for you as well.

My male, Owen, will not kiss me either! He will kiss my husband - he does not kiss alot mind you, but he will give him SMALL kisses.

Owen is my first male and I thought that males just didn't give kisses. All my females have been "licky monsters".

Infact, Owen will only kiss about three people total, all of them men... hmmmmm what does that say about Owen?!!!

In "The Other End of the Leash", Patricia McConnell writes that licking/grooming is usually done to higher pack members by lower pack members - this may not be applicable in your situation, but I thought it was interesting.

Napoleon doesn't "kiss" me either. He is not a big kisser either, unlike Sandy. But, he will kiss dh, my sons, daughter in law, etc. Just not me. He shows me he loves me in other ways, such as, head butting me when I am trying to sleep and rubbing against me when I am dressed for work.

My vet also says it is a submissive gesture and apparently he doesn't feel threatned by me. I guess that is a good thing. I hug and kiss him anyway, he seems to enjoy that!

You're kidding right?! If J.C. decides he likes you, it's hard to STOP him! That includes total strangers. It's part of what makes him a good Therapy Dog.

Scooter-8 month male, rescue, doesn't kiss either. But he does like to be kissed! Hope he starts to kiss soon!

Fletcher will kiss me but not dh. I like the thought that its because he views me as the higher authority. I'll have to share that school of thought with hubby

I'm going with this theory whether it's true or not

Licking can also be a dominant gesture -- as in when they really go to town licking you and you're trying to push them away and it becomes a game. In that case it's a case of "I can lick you if I want because I call the shots, not you"

Also, dogs are attracted to lotions and soap. So a person wearing tasty lotion/soap will probably attract a boxer tongue!
