Yes, chicken will be fine (boneless though). Just boil up a chicken breast or two (or the equivalent in other chicken meat) with about a cup of rice. When the rice is cooked, mash them up well together then let it cool. And then feed around about 1lb per meal to your dog. If it's just a gastric upset she's got, that should clear up the loose stools pretty much straight away.

For weaning her back onto the kibble, just mix some kibble in with the chicken/rice - gradually increasing the amount of kibble in the mixture. That also should just take a couple of days until you're back to feeding solely kibble again.

And yes, some bits of cooked chicken would make excellent training treats. Very healthy!

Cooked chicken can make good treats. If you belong to Coscto, you can get dried chicken breasts strips. They are called Jerky Tenders. They are 100% chicken with nothing added. You can break them up into little pieces. Tara just loves them.

As far as using Chicken as a training treat, that's what I do. I found Gracie was ending up with diarrhea the day or so following her training classes from all the treats used during training. I just boil some chicken breasts and cut them up into little bits and use them for training. I can keep them frozen and then just thaw out a hand full or two before her classes to have ready!

They work great and are definitely more motivating than most store-bought treats!

Hey! I am really glad you wrote this post. Hurley was on antibiotics for puppy vaginitis about a week and a half ago and she just started having loose stool as well. I was worried that she had gotten into something, but now I am thinking it is just that it killed the good bacteria. She eats Canidae as well and hadnt had any problems until like 3 days ago. I was soo worried!!

Do you have to boil the chicken breast in order for its optimal nutritional value to be reached? I only ask because I usually grill chicken, and I'm thinking we could use leftovers for Griffey treats.

Uh oh...she is getting worse :(

Okay I tried the chicken and rice for a day and a bit and Liza is getting worse! She has mushier poop and she is also going a lot less and is full of tons of nasty gas, which we usually don't have.

What could this mean? Do you think that maybe she has developed an allergy to chicken? Could that be why she is mushy on Canidae? And now the chicken and rice?

Last week I had a stool test done so I know there are no parasites. What else could it be? Thanks :)

That's unusual. Given her age, I'd suspect something like coccidia, but your stool test should have shown that up.

But yes, it is possible that it is chicken that just doesn't agree with your pup. If you exchange the chicken for hamburger, and try that with boiled rice, we'll soon see.

I guess the last possibility there is that it's actually rice that doesn't work for her. Rice is generally the least problematic grain out there, but there are still a few dogs who can't tolerate it (or other grains).

Anyway, my best suggestion for the moment is hamburger and rice. If that doesn't help, I'd be inclined to take her back to the vet and just make absolutely sure there isn't something like coccidia in her little system. That would need some meds, I'm afraid.

Thanks gmcleod. Do you think it would be okay to give her like 50% hamburger and rice, and 50% kibble? Then again, if the chicken is the problem...arg. I just think she may not be getting enough calories. How many cups of rice and how many cups of hamburger do you think I should give her/meal (she gets 2 meals/day)? What about a probiotic powder?
