Why I'm Thankful for Boxers

This is a true story.

Ten days ago I began vomiting and passing blood. I slipped into a coma as the crimson life flowed out of me like melting lava.

My hospice nurse came by a day later and could not arouse me nor was she able to get a response from my boxers. She rang the bell, banged on the door yet no dogs and no me.

I had been lying there some 24 hours in pools of my own blood and my dogs had not been fed nor given food or fresh water as they usually are daily.

My nurse then called my neighbor, Debbie, who came running. She too tried to get a response from me, banging on the door and calling the dogs, but no dogs and no response from me. She began to become hysterical. She thought some axe murderer had come and killed all of us.

They called the Fire Department. The Fire Dept. also banged on the door and windows but no dogs, no response from me. So they decided to chop the lock off of the back door and enter.

Once they got inside, they found me slipping away, and my dogs on the bed with me staring at me. The dogs did not bark, growl, or show any response except to watch me and wait.

The fire men (and woman) worked for about 1/2 hour trying to revive me but could not. The dogs would not move. They stayed by my side, watching, hoping and waiting. They called EMS to bring an ambulance and take me to the ER where hopefully the doctors could pull me out of this. As they waited for EMS they tried to get the dogs outside so EMS could work on me when they arrived but, the dogs would not move. They still did not growl, bark or show any aggression whatsoever. They only waited by my side.

Finally Debbie found the treats and coaxed Maggie and Rider out of the room and into the back yard. But Susie would not leave my side. The firewoman happens to own a Boxer as well so she simply picked Susie up and carried her outside. Susie was determined to stay by my side but they had to take me to ER.

Three people have told me this story now and are so impressed with the love and devotion my dogs have shown.

When I heard about it from the nurse, I didn't really believe it. But three independent people have now told me the same story.

When I heard this, I was stunned by my dogs. And last night as I lie awake listening to the mournful whistle of the trains go by, tears rolled down my face as I realized that this Thanksgiving I have not only my life to be thankful for but, I have been taught something very few people on this earth get to know in reality: I have been taught the real meaning of love; the true and deep understanding of devotion and . . .

I know now that I would gladly give my life up to save any one of my dogs. They've given me something so few have ever felt or known.

And should the day come where the unthinkable occurs and I don't come 'round again, I know something for sure: I will never be alone as long as I have my Boxers.

If anyone ever asks you what is so special about Boxers, tell them this story and ask if their Lassie or Rin Tin Tin would do that for them? I truly doubt it.

I thank God this Thanksgiving for not only another chance at life but also for the incredible gift of Boxers. Were it His plan for me to cast myself naked across the seas and sands I would gladly do so because He has given me a gift more precious than anything of Heaven or on Earth. He's given me my Boxers.

Maggie, Susie, Rider... Thank you. You have made me the luckiest man on earth.

Dan

I am sitting here with a lump the size of a football in my throat and tears running down my face as I read your thread. Tulsa Dan, I believe that you really love your babies from the bottom of your heart and soul and that is so refreshing to hear when the world is full of egotisical men that thinks that they are bigger and more powerful then an animal and treats them so badly. You are one in a million, don't get me wrong there are many men out there that love animals but there are some that are just jerks. I, too, am thankful this Thanksgiving to have my boxer as I know she would be there for me also in a time of trouble as this. Thanks for sharing your story and Happy Thanksgiving to you, Maggie, Rider and Susie from Shakira and Debbie

Dan, it is so awefull that you had to go through this ordeal, but for the gang to go through this as well....they have given you the best gift that any human is able to get....the gift of true love from a boxer....I do believe they where watching over you as guardian angels from above....with allot of help from all our babies at the bridge....strength is in numbers....numbers of boxers that is.....

As I would like to say thank you to all the boxers at Rainbow Bridge that had anything to do with your being saved by 5 angels

(Your Nurse, Debbie, Maggie, Susie, Rider)....

Please take care,

Dan, I'm so sorry to hear you've been so ill too. But what an amazing family of wonderful dogs you've got to love, and who so clearly love you right back :)

Take care

Dan, I am so sorry that you are going through this difficult time with your health. I hope that soon things will start to look up for you. The love that you've shown your dogs in their lifetime, they in turn reflect it back to you. They know that they are the most important things in your life by the love you show them and they way you treat them. And you know that you are the most important thing in their lives by the love they show you and the way they treat you. You all are truely lucky to have each other. What a strong foursome! Lets keep it that way, take care of yourself. Keep drawing your strength from the strength of your boxers. I know Layla is my life and I'm also thankful for each and every day with her. (Even though us Canadians had our Thanksgiving last month!)

Dan,
The beautiful eloquence of your story wrenches my heart. Firstly, I am sorry to hear that you are still not well. God bless all the wonderful people who were there to help you in your time of need. God blesses you with Maggie, Susie and Rider. who are indeed living expressions of His divine love. Every moment with these wonderful boxer babies by your side must be such a comfort to you. Each of us who is fortunate enough to have boxers in our lives knows how very special they are. Today, and actually every day, I acknowledge that I have been blessed. My Grunt's love is like no other and he has taught me some soulful lessons, for which I am so very grateful.

This Thanksgiving Day, I envision you with your babies in a warm circle of love. It can't get any better than that!! Take care and know that your friends at BW and their babies send you love, tons of healing vibes, and a whole bunch of boxer hugs and mooshy kisses. :)
