I am familiar with the registry most puppy millers use as I know someone who worked at a small pet store. If your friend's pup doesn't have AKC registration, it will be very difficult to trace the pups ancestors. Most puppy mills have stopped using AKC or have been suspended from using their registry service for any number of reasons, failing DNA testing, random inspections of facilities, breeding dogs too young, breeding dogs too often, etc. Often these "other" registries are created by puppymillers for puppymillers as most buyers want registered dogs and don't know enough about the other registries.

He can go to www.nopuppymills.com and research a pet store purchased puppy from there.

As for the "alternate" registry bodies, there was a guy that used to be here on the forums and tested one of these groups by registering a litter of goat kids as boxers - he was able to do it successfully, even with photo submission. So, the integrity of these "alternates" is certainly questionable.

You are right. AKC is fairly loose about their registration in that they have to rely on the good faith of those sending in the forms. But even their rules seem too rigid for those that want to make them up as they go along. So such people created a whole host of ridiculous "registries". The reason? So they can legally and honestly say their pups are "Registered" or "Papered" as the lesser breeders like to claim.

One of these awful registries simply requires you to say your dog is a Boxer and have 2 friends willing to say they also believe your dog is a Boxer. Oh yea, that REALLY sounds impressive :(

Taken directly from the rules for registration by the Continental Kennel Club (formly sued by the Canadian Kennel Club for using the same CKC acronym):

5. The CANINE Registration Application must be used to register dogs whose parents are not registered with CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB. The dog owner must complete the application and provide a copy of registration papers from another kennel club (approved by CKC) as proof of his/her dog being purebred. If other kennel club papers are not available, the dog owner must provide two witnesses who can verify the accuracy and truthfulness of the information listed on the application. If any of the information listed on the application is challenged, the dog owner agrees to bring forth said witnesses according to current CKC guidelines.

Oh yea, that is real encouraging :(

:eek: That is unbelievable, how stupid can it get!

The CKC (continental) is scary too in that there webpage sounds good. Mac could have been CKC registered, not AKC, though we never bothered to send in the papers. When we went to get him the "breeders" said he was CKC, because AKC was too expensive and that it was the same. So, of course I didn't know any better, looked up info on it, and really to someone who knows NOTHING it sounded good. Basically criticizes the AKC in a way that works for someone who doesn't really know anything abour purebred dogs. Encourages "new breeds" to stop the "inbreeding" that occurs in the AKC, etc.

So, I thought it was fine and dandy. Then came Boxerworld...oops, was I wrong.

But it is frightening that I am an intelligent person, a law student, and I could be tricked by an organization such as that. For the people who dont have BW or another such group, how will they ever know??? I mean, the CKC people really made it sound good.

This is because you used your heart to pick your puppy and not your brain. Irresponsible breeders count on this normal reaction. Even if you think, "Oh, I am not sure about that", they will offer you to hold that cute cute cute puppy. Your heart then tells your brain to Shut Up and shoves it into a closet.

I don't mean that to sound harsh. But these people really are good. They know how to play it and how to make everyone else sound like they are out to get the poor pitiful loving family breeder. I get the saddest emails and phone calls from people that have been totally lied to and taken advantage of. We can't change the irresponsible breeders. But hopefully the www can help educate new puppy buyers to Beware.

PawPrint is right. They're very good at spotting a rookie puppy owner and know how to manipulate those heart strings. In the case I mentioned earlier my friends wife went in to the store after not finding any puppies avail. from breeders this time of year (for good reason) and unfortunately found a very cute, almost all white male puppy that they say is 8 weeks but lookes small to me. They then quickly put the puppy in her hands and showed her to the play room. Then they showed her all kinds of paperwork from some unknown registry and said the breeder holds the AKC papers untill the dog is sold. Then they went on to explain how rare the white ones were and that's why it cost $1,000.00. Next thing you know a non refundable deposit was being forked over. He hadn't even seen the dog himself yet. He's a smart guy but he too made every mistake possible in the purchase of a dog. We went to see his new puppy at the store last night and the salespeople there tried all the same moves on us also. "Isn't he just the cutest?" "You're so lucky your wife found him before someone else did, especially this close to X-mas" "You're little boy really loves him you should've seen them together" Yes his wife brought their two year old son with her to look at puppies. I was there five minutes and I wanted to kill somebody I just couldn't decide who to start with, him or them. I had him almost convinced to get his deposit back or just walk away before we got there and then he saw that face and he fell apart on me, next thing he's asking is what do you think I should name it and the sales lady says you could always look at his pedigree for inspiration. To which I replied "I don't think his wife wants him naming the dog "Bull@#$%" Thanks for letting me vent.
