 We have tried leaving Otis in the porch with the baby gate. He has plenty of toys, water and even chew toys. But, He is still knocking down the baby gate. I have even tried blocking the doorway with his kennel and the baby gate above that. He has even figured out how to open the step-on garbage lid! (smart little devil) When he was 10 months old, I thought I would give him an hour to himself while I ran errands. When I came back he ruined my leather chair, tore the whole backside off!

well, now just the other day I thought that I would try it again. He is now a 1 1/2. He was still able to tear the gate down and ate my bananas and all the butter that was sitting on the kitchen counter, and then if that wasn't enought he got into the garbage and took out last nights leftovers (pork steaks, nummy for him) yes, we had a sick baby the next day. Now I am convinced that I am going to have to wait until he is at least two or three years old and maybe try it again.
I just feel so bad leaving him in his kennel for almost 4 hours at a time. I do come home from lunch everyday to let him out. I feel that he should be old enough now that he could handle it.

Don't get me wrong, he hasn't been all bad. There have been a few times where he actually did very well. I am just not sure what else I can do. I am open for suggestions.

I should mention that the cat may have something to do with the naughty behavior. They are after all best buds and have to be near each other all the time.

What can I do? Or is it just a waiting game until he gets older?

I had the same problem with Rocky that you're having with Otis. I was leaving in apartments at the time and Rocky was going through his chew phase (sofa, mattress, bed, toilet paper, trash...) However, he is now a very good and trustable boy, and has been for several years. Hang in there and use Apple Bitter Spray, that spray litterally saved my furniture at the time.

We are fortunate in that Oscar has his own room, I don't know if I could give him full run of the house when we are out coz if someone were to come to the door he would go mental foolicon

His room is lovely and big though and has everything in there that he needs - all his toys, his bed, 2 radiators when it's cold, a low window he can look out of and a table thingy with his bowls of water and food on !!

Not that we spoil him or anything :D :D

Chelsea stays in the florida room/family room. She has her own sofa, lots of blankets to lay on, heat/ac, ceiling fans, and a fantastic view. We would let her have the run of the house but we're afraid the cat will torment her. When we're home, Chelsea has full run and sleeps in our room at night.

Boomer stays in his crate when I'm not home. I'm planning on working with him over the next several months in the hopes that he'll be able to lounge on 'his' bed during the day rather than snooze in his crate.

Cheers,

When I leave Remus alone, he is quite freely in the apartment. But I do shut the bedroom`s door, because cats are in there, that`s their dog-free-time  When he was a puppy, he destroyed absolutely everything  , but now for years he hasn`t destroyed almost anything, he sleeps during the time he is alone. My boyfriend and I have a bit different working times, so Remus is alone about 4 hours, or not even that :)

Free reign of the Backyard

I was laid off in October so we figured it would be a great time to get a puppy. We already had Daisy and Lucy. We got Mejo and I was there for him constantly until the beginning of April, I had to go back to work.

We have let all three of them and the cat stay in the backyard (about 1/3 of an acre)... they have access to an indoor patio that has three doggie beds, a cat tree, water, and of course a tv! They seem to enjoy it.

Mejo did teach us a few lessons since then:
-Always keep the shed door shut (tore up a flower food box)
-don't leave cell phones on the patio table (yep he destroyed a NOKIA)
-Make sure that the litter box is out of reach (nasty, eewww, he loved it)

We were concerned about Mejo jumping the fence but he still has yet to even try. Our big purchase this summer: 6ft fence. When we were growing up our first boxer used to jump these as well, hopefully that was a one time thing.

I am also able to go home for lunch everyday and check on them all.

Lately Mejo has been digging in our gardens though, so we will have to put up those little fences, otherwise it seems as though even thing is ok.

We have a padlock on our gate and the only gate in the back is 6ft.

We recently built a chainlink dog run. Both their houses are in there under the tree. I'm planning on getting a plastic baby pool for the summer. Jack loves the sprinkler, hopefully he will like to swim.
