DH and I are totallly at odds about when to get Bella spayed.
He wants to wait until after she has a heat cycle. I want to get it done NOW. She is almost 7 months.

I have ask my vets office and they say around 6 or 8 months, before a heat cycle. DH dad always told him females are just better dogs after they have a heat cycle... I am not so sure about that.

I know there are pros and cons for getting it done early.
Also, Napoleon is starting to smell around her back end and that bothers me as well. How is he going to react if she does go into heat??

We need to decide on this within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

We had our female Boxer spayed at 5 months because I didn't want any unexpected pregnancies or any other male dogs coming around. She had no problems and she is a very good girl.

I can attest to the fact that waiting to spay after a heat cycle does nothing to make your dog a better dog. I waited with Arabella and she is just as much a pain in the butt after a heat cycle and then spayed as she was before. Do yourself a favor and spay now. You will miss the whole inconvience of the mess, plus any unwanted dogs getting near your girl. While she is in heat the only time outside she will get is to potty. That means you will have to wear out an active boxer indoors. The only way we managed this is because Arabella loves to play fetch! We would sit at the top of the stairs and throw the ball down. After 20 or so throws she would be good for about 1-2 hours.

My first girl went into heat right after I had moved and before I had found a vet. She ended up with a false pregnancy. I caught the symptoms early and she was spayed within days. Many dogs have psychological issues from false pregnancies. Thankfully we didn't go there.

further to spay question

I've never had a puppy so don't anything about their first year requirements, but saw this thread today and wanted to ask if it's bad to spay them at 10 weeks? I'm filling in for a foster of general breed rescue this week... two 10 week old boxer pups. The rescue person said they were going to pick them up from me on Friday to get get spayed. Do rescues have to do this before they let the dogs be adopted?

Yes, rescues usually require pets to be spayed/neutered before they go to their new home. Which makes sense in terms of the concern of pet over population. I absolutely would not worry about the early spaying in a rescue situation and I totally would rescue a puppy (or older dog) that has been spayed at an early age. If, however, I would go and purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder I would choose to wait. And obviously be responsible about it and prevent my dog from mating.

My Sasha is getting spayed exactly when she is 6 months old. My vet is also getting rid of her hernia at the same time. The vet advised that at 6 months this was the perfect time as well as before her 1st heat cycle. So far she hasn't had one!
I'm beyond nervous as well regarding this surgery.
I believe all will go well.
