We just got a 6 week old puppy and obviously I DO NOT expect to see him potty trained anytime soon.. lol, I was just wondering at what ages you started to notice your dogs actually realizing that it's not ok to use it inside the house and want to go outside to potty or holding it.

I've never potty trained a boxer puppy before.. And the other two dogs I had raised from puppies weren't well off in the potty training department unless they were in their crates. So any advice is welcomed so I can study/read up more about it.

Quite a while, usually. Well, many pups will start to show some signs of appearing to "get it" relatively quickly - but don't believe it LOL Certainly don't rely on it (or you'll get a nasty wake up call ;)). Dogs are around 7 months old before they really "get" potty training. You can be accident-free long before then, of course, but it is entirely 100% reliant on you rather than the puppy. So you just have to keep on watching them, and keep on anticipating their needs.

I believe it is like potty training skinbabies. Some clue in faster than others. and like all parenting being patient is the biggest thing.

Yup.. Right now I feel like a mother with a newborn. My husband and I take turns bringing him out to potty and sleeping at night.. lol

My Rocky is 3 months old and the last week or so he has finally started going potty pretty much right away when he is let out. (I don't know if this is because it has gotten colder and he justs wants to get it over with) In the house though he has not started waiting by the door or giving us any signs that he needs to go. He pretty much just goes anywhere and everywhere. I guess it just takes awhile. I had just finished potty training my Jack Russel Terrier right before we got Rocky. He potty trained at about 3 months and we trusted him enough at 3 1/2 months to start letting him loose in the house when we leave during the day. I guess every dog is different because I know Rocky won't be potty trained for quite some time yet. Good luck with the potty training!

Brutus is now almost 11 wks old, got him at 7. The breeder I got him from must of been pretty good because during the first week the concept of outside=bathroom clicked. There has been a couple times when he just could'nt hold it but that was no fault of his. Overall i think it was due to my wife's efforts of bathroom training him every couple hours. You will cue in to the signs of him needing to go, Brutus gets kind of anxious and does his little pee pee dance

I keep to the basics right now.. Watching him like a hawk and after playing/eating/sleeping/drinking he goes outside shortly after. I also try to take him out at least every hour, Sometimes a little longer depending on what he's doing and if I think it's time to or not. Obviously when he starts sniffing around we snatch him up and hurry outside. :)

Our female was 5 months old when we got her and she was basically potty trained. It also helps that I'm a stay at home wife so I can spend all day/night with them and we're usually home so there are no long hours away.

Can I just say that Sugar Pie (my Bichon) just had her 3rd birthday and is JUST NOW not pottying in the house!!!!

Sampson is 4.5 months old and has quite a few oops's in the house, especially now that it's cold. He just needs to be watched closer......

Kona finally started getting it at around 5 months. We went thru alot of frustration until then, but when you finally get there you quickly forget what it took to get there. :)

We're on track again.. After Toby got back from the vet it was hell. :( We lost track of each other's schedules and he decided it was ok to stay up when we were sleeping, etc.. But now we're doing good again.

He's gone to the door a couple of times and scratched to go out.. We let him out and he pottied. He's very good about pottying when he goes outside so I can't complain about that. I'm just glad we're back to our old schedule again.

I'm thinking he'll be pretty much potty trained by 4/5 months.
