what to do in HOT weather

being in the inland of Southern California, its really starting to get HOT HOT HOT here. We take our pups out in the evenings (sometimes to the dog park, but usually just on walks or to our back field), but during the days, i feel so bad for the babies. they just lay around all day, every time i go somewhere, they want to go too, but its WAAAYYYY too hot for them to be in a car for more than 5 seconds. I can only go to Petsmart/Petco so many times  our old house had a swimming pool, which i am REALLY missing now, and we used to play with the dogs there during the days, but now no pool :( ... so for those of you that live in hot hot weather, what activities do you do with your dogs when its hot?

we're here too....

We're out in the West End San Fernando Valley and it's been in the 100's. We mostly let the dogs sleep all day, and then go outside with them and hose them all down. Mush loves it, it's a water game to her. But I too get a little concerned mostly for her, not so much my two other dalmatians. But they all seem to know that during the day when it's unbareably hot, not to really do anything. They wait till sundown.

If you can, you may want to get a baby wading pool for your pups. I know many other BW'ers have said they have one for theirs. You can also freeze a rag or towel for them to chew on (Farley loves that!) All in all though, I think the best thing is just to limit time outdoors. It's pretty hot here too, (although not 98 degrees like I think I saw for your weather this morning), and Farley just gets miserable outside, so we just don't stay out very long.

When we're at my parents', Farley loves to play in the hose, and that keeps him cool. But you can only stand there with a hose for so long! Not to mention wasting all that water and then paying the water bill (we're having a water rate crisis here, can you tell?)

I know what ya mean... I feel so bad for them because they have to lay around the house all day. Here if it is not pouring and storming it is bright and HOT! So they are stuck either way. And in the evenings you can't do too much outdoors either (with the moist weather we've had lately, mosquitos are at an all time high! and you get followed and mauled by swarms!!!!! AHH)
I normally just have to take them to play after the sun goes down (with bug repellant on and only for a little while). I can't wait til winter!! :) (our winters are mild and feel more like fall). ;)

We've had pretty hot weather her too - nearing the 100's. I walk the pups early morning before it gets hot. They lay around the house all day on the air conditioning vents. Then, in the evening we play in the water hose. My pups wont play in the kiddie pool so I end up standing there with the hose! LOL silly dogs.

kiddie pools

hehe, we have one of these too... i feel sooo funny standing outside with the dogs running around (in and out of the pool) when cars would drive by.. esp, since i have no kiddies! :D anyways, our pups love the hose too.. i just wish we had an indoor dogpark, but i am glad to know that other pups are just lounging during the day too... i don't feel as bad for them! hehe.

I am in Ohio and although it is not in the 100's it is extremely humid...just miserable. My girl loves to be outside, no matter the temp. I take her for walks early mornings and late evenings but she still loves to be out during the day. We tried the kiddle pool but she was only interested in attacking any bug that happened to get into it. I have been thinking about getting the sprinkler out and letting her play in that but we have a watering restriction that only allows for every other day.

We have a few big trees that provide good shade but she still gets extremely hot so I opt for allowing her outside for only 20 minutes max at any one time. Then she is indoors usually on an air vent letting the AC cool her off. I also have a fan in my bedroom and she will oftentimes lay on the bed directly in front of the fan waiting for me to turn it on so that it blows directly on her. Plenty of ice cubes, lots of cold water and popsicles.

She loves to play hide-n-seek with me so we do that inside alot to try and burn up some of that Boxer energy!

I just take Roxi out for short walks and then bring her in and if she is really really hot I will run a cool bath and play with her in the water to cool her off and I will repeat this as many times as I can then at night I do the same thing as you do.

I keep a fan on the floor and have found Cassius many times laying right in front of it. Also put ice cubes in his water dish and have filled ziplocks with ice water for him to lay on. He also plays in the hose and a plastic kiddie pool. There have been a couple of times I thought my poor baby was going to pass out, like when we take him on walks and he overheats...he gets all frothy and extra panting (yipes).

Soleilboxers where are you located. Just curious cause we're in Corona(I.E). It's been hot here too and although we have a pool Bugzy wants nothing to do with it.
