Oh no...there is a skunk who has been visiting our backyard lately (you can tell by the smell! YUCK!) I just want a heads up in case Hurricane gets sprayed (please no!). I had heard that you are suppose to bath dogs in tomato juice? Has anyone out there had this unfortunate experience? Hurricane cries to be let out and I think he knows when our smelly friend is around!

The link that Buddy'sMom provided is a mixture that my mom had to use just this summer and it works! Her dog was back in the house within an hour or so of it happening.

My sons dog got sprayed a couple weeks ago and he used straight tomatoes, he picked them from his garden and then blended them and poured it on his dog , then rinsed it off. You couldn't smell a thing.

Whoa

Well my dog Jake got sprayed a few years back. That is not fun. I took him out for his last potty of the night and the skunk was under a huge bush in the back of the yard. Jake stuck his head under and got sprayed right in the face. He pulled his head out from under the bush, shook his head, and stuck it right back under and got sprayed straight in the face a second time. There was black hair on his chin so I think the skunk got the worse end of the deal.

The first thing I did was shoot his face with the hose 'cause it went in his eyes. Then I sent my wife to the store to get several cans of tomato juice. I poured it all over him and let him "marinate" for about ten minutes. Then repeated the process several times.

I agree with LAboxerluvr. You should get rid of the skunk before it's a problem, but just call animal control in your town/county, they will set a trap for you and take it away.

I'd find any area it can get in through your fence (if you have one) and block it off with concrete blocks or dig down and put wire at least 8 inches into the ground and attach it to the fence - skunks dig!!!!!

My two, as well as the other neighbors (we kinda took turns - eeewww) got sprayed twice last year. I found that the product made by Natures Miracle - skunk odor remover works pretty well. It says not to douse their faces with it, but mine got sprayed directly in the face so I did it anyway - using a cloth just doesn't cut it! And DOUSE like there is no tomorrow!!! The more you pour the more success you will have.

My next door neighbor said that the extra strength vinegar Summers Eve douche works pretty well also, but since the other worked so well for me I didn't bother.

As for the tomatoe juice.....I think its an old wives tale, as I found at 2:00 am the first time, with nothing else on hand, it didn't do squat and it burned my dogs skin - left little welts everywhere. I don't think the acid in the tomatoes mixed well with the ick from the skunk.

Make sure you wear something you can throw away when you wash the dogs, and I would do it outside, cuz that smell DOES NOT WASH OUT and if you get drippy in the house it will smell forever!

Nothing will get it 100% out as it is a oil and will just have to wear off. You can wash with whatever you want and every time they get wet it will stink for awhile until it finally wears off. Tomatoe juice does work but it is like everything else it all depends on your dog. Some dogs may be allergic to it . There are many things that will take the initial smell away, Massengil douche vinegar does works also. You are just going to have to experiment to see what will work for you.
As far as not dousing their faces I agree with boxermom5 as 99.9% of all dogs get sprayed in the face(because they use their mouths to go after the skunk), you have to douse their faces just becareful not to get it in their eyes, and always rinse their eyes out as ASAP after they are sprayed.

Boxxy's been sprayed a few times, there's some stuff called SOS (skunk odor Shampoo) works REALLY well and fast, it's incredible, you just wash your baby with this stuff and POOF the smell is gone, it's unreal, as far as getting rid of the skunk, I managed to get rid of a couple of them, I trapped them with a snare the next day I threw a tarp on it and brought it to the woods, it's the garbage, nearly impossible to get rid of them for good, they come back, always
