I always thought they were beautiful dogs. Last year while visiting my brother, I made the comment, if I ever had another dog it would be a boxer. Two hours later, my brother called, a friend of his had an abandoned Boxer that needed a home. I think it was DESTINY!!!!

My grandmother had a boxer when I was in high school and I loved the rough and tumble play followed by the major cuddles. So when my wife and I decided to get a dog there was very little discussion about what kind of dog we would get. I researched local boxer rescues and we now have two of the most beautiful, intelligent, loveable, sweet, caring, and funny boxers there are (isn't everybody's?). I highly recommend at least looking for a local boxer rescue when considering getting a new boxer. I think that most people would be surprised how many boxers there are in rescue.

Dexter makes 4

I was SO against having a dog! I vowed that if we were to get a "second child" that it would not be one that is allowed on the furniture, on the bed, gets table scraps, be very big, barks or sheds!! Growing up at home my parents always had 2 or 3 dogs at a time that were major shedders, and would sit and watch you eat! Oh how I hated that!
Then my DH and Skin Daughter talked me into a mini daschund (Copper). He was allowed on the furniture, rarely on the bed, but not any of the other things. He was such a cool baby in 3 months I only heard him bark twice and it was at the vaccum :) ! Unfortunitely we knew squat about dogs or the diseases they can get, and one day he got sick the Vet said it was Parvo, due to lack of money we had to put him down :( .
A year later the baby fever was back however only this time it was me who had it...I longed for the greatness that we'd found in Copper. Although the odds were against us, having had Parvo in our home we started the endless research on Boxers and Parvo among others and well.... Here we are allowed on the furniture, King of the Queen Bed, and Big. However is very well mannered (most of the time) and only barks when he REALLY wants your attention, which isn't very often he sometimes gets more than anyone else! Ultimately we picked a Boxer because the breed fit us and our lifestyle as well as personality. I swear Dexter thinks he's human...maybe because for the most part we treat him like one. We swear he listens better than our 7year old Skin kid sometimes!!
We also vowed that no matter what the exspense or having to go into debt any medical problem would be taken care of no matter what. We weren't ever going to loose another baby because we didn't have the money, we'll hock something first!

I had always planned on rescuing a greyhound, but had a very old cat who we didn't think would tolerate a dog. When Grady died at the age of 20 in November 2003, I started talking about getting a dog (hung out on greyhound rescue websites) but dh wasn't ready and besides was sure I wouldn't like having a dog as much as I thought I would.

At one point I said to somebody, "The only way I'm getting a dog is if he shows up in my backyard." And he did! on Memorial Day weekend 2004.

I've said in another post that I didn't even know what a boxer with natural ears looked like so I didn't know what kind of dog he was. Now I'm obsessed with my pup and dh just shakes his head and says "I can't believe how much you love that dog." He loves him too! lovicon
