I am a proud new boxer owner. Harley is his name. I'm very excited to have him in the family. I have read about bell traing here but am unsure how to get more information about it. Can anyone help? Thanks, Rick.

Have you tried a search of the forums yet? You'll find hundreds of threads about it 
Essentially its hanging a bell on the door you use to go outside and everytime you go through it to take your dog potty you get him to ring the bell. Eventually he will realise that ringing the bell = going potty and he'll let you know when he needs to go outside

I have yet to check forums about the bell thing. I'm new at this and am excited about finding new information on how to be a better parent to HARLEY (our boxer) I also am interested in your opinion about clipping the ears of our boxer. Is it safe?.....Rick

Weeelll, where im from we dont crop ears. I personally wouldnt do it, I love their floppy ears :D. It just involves so much after care and theres always the risk that you may lose your puppy. Theres a thread on here about someone who did actually lose her puppy during the ear crop and she was just devastated :( There is always a risk with putting any dog under anesthetic.
Its completely up to you though. Do research it thoroughly and be prepared to pay a few hundred $$ and for many months of taping and posting

We're getting our puppy in two weeks and I've done some research on the bell training. Go to www.poochiebells.com. They sell them and they have a video on their web site that you can view for free and you'll get good info from them. I've heard from several boxer breeders that boxers do well with bell training. Good luck! And about the ear cropping, we're NOT doing our little girl. Our feeling is if she's not going to be a show dog, why put her through that when she first come home. Also, very few places even near us will do it. The floppy ears are sooooo cute!

Completely Boxer Crazy
We have had four boxers, three are still with us. Roxie had hers done when she was 6 weeks old, we got her at eight weeks, Dylan we had done, this was 11yrs ago, and we would never do it again. Maya we adopted, she is a retired show dog so they were already done when we adopted her at 3yrs. Houston our 8 month old pup we would not do, or any others, In my estimation it's not necessary and I think it's painful, we don't believe in it. I guess you could say wev'e learned by our mistakes, sadly our babies had to learn with us :( This is just my opinion, after what I saw Dylan go through, I could never do it.

what did you and your dogs go through? It sounds as if it may have been a bit tramatic.We dont want any tramatic stuff as we have a baby on the way as well. Maybe you could share your experience to enlighten us on this subject. Thanks. Rick and Sam

Bells and Ears
First off, Bell Training:
This turned out to be a wonderful thing for me and my boy (1 yr old on 11/12/05, fawn). He rings that bell when he wants out to play and/or poo.
It took him less than a day to "get it". I just got a treat and made him reach for it with either his nose or paw, once he had that down I took the treat and put it behind or really close to the bell. I started saying "Ring the Bell" once he hit the bell I'd Give him the treat and praise his him like the smart little fella he is. I did this over and over again. Once he was comfortable with this, EVERY time we went out whether it was my choice or his, I made him ring the bell. It's a great tool.
He sleeps with me, so if he gets up in the middle of the night I don't really have to worry about getting up unless I hear the bell.

I left mine floppy and I love it =). Oh, and I left Bogey's floppy as well......
