What do your dogs go potty on?

This may seem like a strange topic, but I told my husband I'd ask!

Our dogs go potty on the side of our house, on grass. Can't remember what kind it is, but it's what our landscaper recommended, saying it was good for dogs to go potty on. (St. Augustine? I think that's it.)

We had a sprinkler pipe leaking under the grass for some time, making the ground extra wet, making the areas the dogs walked on the most muddy, causing the grass in those areas to die. The pipe is fixed now, but my husband is debating if we should replace the grass or put something else down.

I'm wanting to know if any of you have, or have heard of, using anything other than grass or dirt for dog's potty areas. My husband was talking about putting a bunch of sand down in a 6x6 area or something. I thought it sounded crazy, but then realized that's basically what cat's do. Except that's indoors. No rain. Seems like that would make a difference. Maybe not. I'll have to mention that to him!

Anyways, I told him I'd bring it up to you guys and see if you had any suggestions. I think going back to grass is perfectly fine and that's probably what we'll do, but any suggestions are welcome.

We have Kentucky Bluegrass in our back yard and it holds up pretty well against the boys. When we were reseeding we had straw in areas the boys overused and it didn't do any good, all they did was kick it up and cary it off to play with. I don't know about sand but my guess is it might get kinda messy.

My boy would be soooo mad if I din't let him mark his territory! If you find something that works, let us know. My boy is supposed to use the heavily mulched flower beds, but still likes to go on some plants and grass. :)

My yard is mainly sand and has small amount of grass in places. PJ does not mind peeing on sand or grass but always poops on grass. I know it sounds weird.

Lincoln48 - so what is it like in the places where he pees in the sand? Does it smell? Does it just soak in and you don't notice it? Do you ever clean it?

Bugzy goes on concrete so we can just hose it down. I find it to be the easiest way keep the area clean.

It just soaks in, It doesn't seem smell where I can notice. There are cats around that pee in my yard and that you can smell! I just wish people would take care of their cats.

Maddie has only been home for five days...but somehow she decided that she would go pee in the grass and poop in the rocks. I wish it were the other way around to save the grass!!
