What do I need to know?

So, our new baby comes home in 3 1/2 weeks. I am so excited!
I have never had a boxer before (although my partner has), and I have done a lot of reading about them. I know to expect the energy, goofyness, and happy, playful spirit. And I am not new to puppies, in general.
But I was wondering, what do you wish you had known before you got your first boxer? What takes new owners by surprise? What should I know about boxers that I won't find out through research?
I am counting the days before our little guy gets here!

I second the amount of energy being something you can't actually grasp until you are living it. Some Boxers are lower energy than others which means that *some* are beyond anything you can imagine. Both of my girls have been off the charts as far as energy levels are concerned and I have been lucky in that my work schedule has always allowed me to provide (what I thought) was plenty of mental stimulation and vast amounts of exercise. Sadly mistaken in that arena!!

Don't be alarmed or ashamed of "puppy regret". It happens.....I spent weeks crying every day when I brought Cami home nearly 9 years ago. She was just SO MUCH to handle. Thinking I knew what I was getting myself into with Raine and there wouldn't be any issues I couldn't handle I had blinders on. This girl, now almost 20 months old has thrown me for a massive loop. She knows every single one of my buttons and pushes them daily.

Learn to deal with a stubborn dog who thinks they know it all. They are quite intelligent even if they don't always act like it and the two make an explosive combination. I like to say that I can make Raine do anything SHE wants to do and it really does fit the bill.

You will read that Boxers are a sensitive breed and this is 100% true but it also means so much more. This sensitivity affects them in so many ways and you will come to realize over time what your new addition can handle and what they can't. My DH and I know that we can't have a conversation through a door (him on one side and me on the other) and use loud voices to be heard. Both of my girls have reacted negatively in these situations. I don't know if the louder voices is upsetting (I assume so) or if they don't understand why they can hear two voices yet only see one person. They are happiest when their whole family is happy. They can sense your down days with sadness, bad moods and times of joy. They feed off of human emotions. Learn to keep yours in check so they are not affected. A sad or worried Boxer is a troubling sight!!

If they want something they will figure out a way to get it. If this means climbing on something they will. If they need to dig to China to find it they will. If they (when they) figure out that whining gets them what they want they will do that too. They are problem solvers plain and simple. If they can't by any means figure something out they will use their humans which in reality means they DID go about figuring out something they just added a person into the equation.

Boxer learn differently than a good portion of other breeds. Most dogs learn by repetition. Boxers have a short attention span (if they have one at all) and they get bored very quickly. As much as their bodies are in motion....so are their brains. You can literally watch a Boxer and know when they are thinking. I received this info from my trainer friend.....
Teach a Boxer to sit by showing them what you want. Use the word with the action. They learn (as most dogs will). Continue to ask a Boxer to sit and you get something like this....
Sit.
Boxer Sits.
Sit.
Boxer thinks about what else might be more fun.
Sit.
Boxer has thought that checking out something in the corner will be amusing to them.
Sit....
Boxer is no where to be found!

Change things up and you will get far better results much faster! Don't think your new pup is too young to start learning. Don't overwhelm them but do start them on a routine the day you bring them home. Don't allow things that might be cute NOW as a tiny baby that won't be so adorable as a 60lb teenager (who can be an idiot) or an adult.

Reading as much as you can from this forum will provide some insight and a lot of useful information but until you are in the trenches you won't really know what to expect. To love a Boxer and to be loved by one is one of life's greatest joys. Considered yourself owned by a Boxer and enjoy every minute of it. I have yet to meet another Boxer lover whose life wasn't changed for the better by sharing their life with one.
It is truly an amazing adventure!

I have 2 boys.
The first one was super easy.. he is laid back ;)
The second.. hmm.. I wish I would have registered right away in (positive reinforcement only) classes, from puppy ;) - he is dog reactive. I should have jumped on it RIGHT AWAY instead of thinking he would "get over it" ...

:0

Have FUN!!!! boxer love to have fun and that is how they learn. They can shut down very fast, so keep it fun! appicon

We too have our first Boxer puppy!

We too have our first Boxer puppy. We have a 7 month old female. We brought her home when she was 8 weeks. She has been a very good puppy so far!

The only thing I could complain about, is we went through two doggie beds with her. She would tear them to shreds while we were gone. We finally invested in a chew proof bed with a 90 day guarantee, that I found on online. It was expensive.. but well worth it! She tried and tried to shred it, but has finally given up. This bed is Boxer proof!!

We do have an older male Labrador that provides her with a buddy when we can't spend time with her.

One thing I am finding out with the Boxer puppy that is different from our Lab puppies, is that she is very clingy! She wants to be right beside us all the time. And she can make you feel really guilty if you don't allow her to!!

Like I said, she is 7 months now. I have learned, from just recently joining this forum, that 7 months is when they hit this terrible "teenage years" stage... and that she is going to really try me! So, I am waiting for that to happen! Hopefully, I can endure it!

Good Luck with your little one! I do know one thing... you will fall in LOVE immediately!!

Hahahahaha... YES! The energy level! I "knew" she'd be high energy, but I didn't KNOW it. Now I do! (Although she at least isn't as high energy as our family border collie was!)
Obedience training has helped IMMENSELY with this, and I'm hoping to continue with agility when she's old enough!

Also, I agree with Susi on their persistence in getting what they want - I never cease to be amazed at Daisy's problem-solving skills when it comes to getting something that she oughtn't have!

That said, I love my little velcro-pup more than I can possibly say :) You're in for a treat!

Congrats on the new furbaby! As everyone has mentioned, the energy level I will let that one go, as I am sure you have gotten the point. Now for the smart, inquisitive thing. Get on you floor and look under and around your furniture. Look for all those things that will spark a puppy's interest. One of mine ate the cord from my camera docking station to the computer. I now have a camera charger. Thankfully she didn't chew the power cord.

Problem solving is another biggy. One of mine learned how to open the front door. She also learned how to open the gate to let herself out of the fence to roam the neighborhood. So we had to keep everything locked at all times. After she realized she couldn't open the gate any more she tried climbing the fence. She was 7-8 months old and wasn't quite big enough to try to jump it, but I am sure she could now. She is just past that getting out to explore stage.

Again congratulations! And get plenty of sleep now, as it will may come in short supply later. :)

this made me literaly laugh out loud because this is SO TRUE.... in every sense! When my boy is hungry he will pounce and scoot his food bowl around until I either feed him or remove it until time to eat... :)

I second the advice about "puppy regret"...I was really taken by surprise when that emotion hit us. It goes away and you'll love 'em even more! :)

From day one Dixie had to always be near, if not on top of, us. It's almost become a game sometimes how pathetic she can look before we give in and make room on the couch or bed for her. That sad smoosh face or sigh always wins.

Puppy regret

For 2 weeks I wanted to die....I was thinking what the hell did i get myself into!? we were lucky though, Rocky was and still is a VERY mellow, good dog. I just didn't have puppy experience and had no clue what a time, money, and emotional commitment that owning a dog is - especially a boxer.

I love my guy and wish I could clone him and raise him from puppy hood EVERY time I get a new dog/foster...it would be amazing.

Enjoy the good times, switch off with your partner during the bad times so you don't go crazy. Trust each other and be consistent with training. The more consistent, the faster the dog will learn, Period.

Good luck! Cant' wait to see pics!!!
