What are your vet costs (kinda long)

I would shop around!
The vet I am going to is WONDERFUL! I had been going to him in the past, when I lived with my parents, then I moved across town. The location I live in now is more expensive than my parents. Anyway I was using the Petsmart vet, Banfield, and was getting charged out the butt.
So after a few years I went back to my old vet and am shocked at the price difference. I guess it's the diffence in location. My vet does not charge an office visit! I took my new Min Pin puppy in lastweek. He did a through check of him, weighed him, and then only charged my $3 for worming med!
They kept Cisco overnight for his neuter and it was only $75.

Thanks for all the neuter feedback! I am definitely going to shop around a bit. We are complying with our breeder's wishes to wait until Willis is 9 months... meaning that he's bigger and needs more anasthetic. Also he is monorchid, so that adds a cost, but I still think $400 is out of control!!!

Just curious, why did your breeder ask that you wait until 9 months old before you neuter Willis? I always thought that it should be done before 6 mos of age...especially for females since they usually go in to heat by about that age and once they've had thier first heat it's more expensive (more difficult surgery) plus once they've had thier first heat (females) you run the chance of false pregnancies and also piometra (infectoin of the uterus)...in fact, we know about that first hand because when we brought Keno home our Jack Russell had a false pregnancy (due to "mothering" keno our vet said) and she ended up having emergency surgery (due to infection of the uterus) two weeks before she was due to be spade (cost us $500)....Also, I thought it was best to neuter a male early on to help curb any aggression issues and also the hiking the leg on everything issue that males tend to get....so that's why I was just wondering...we plan on having Keno neutered within the next month or so (by 6 mos of age)...

My vet here in the heart of Silicon Valley charges $35 for the first dog and if you have two dogs that both need exams...the second one is like $29..

Our last bill from a week ago was $99, which included

1) exam for BooBoo
2) exam for Courage
3) rabies shot for Courage
4) DCCP (or whatever that's called) shots for Courage...

So it isn't so bad, plus we'll get 80% of it back from the insurance carrier...

for my vet just for the appontment its 45$+tax for a urinalysis its 26$ the last vet bill for cinnamon was 140 somethin for the visit, a sentinel pill, urinalysis, second booster and kennel cough meds

btw..to get my 5 y/o femal GSD spayed have 2 tumours removed and a biopsy, antibiotics and an overnight stay cost us approx.1500$. It was also laser surgery which helped her heal well

My boxer's spay ended up costing me over $200.00 and she was spayed at 4 months old. I opted to do the blood work for the pre-surgery tests which would have saved me more money but it is my baby so saving money is not an option, she gets whatever she needs and I thought that she definately needed to have that done before surgery.

I only pay $20 for the office visit and our vet is pretty reasonable. She gives you a percentage off if your animals are spayed or neutured as well.

A friend of mine's Dobie got really sick one night and he took it to his vet and he was looking at around $900 or more to run these tests on her cause they couldnt find anything wrong, so i told him to take her to our vet $50 bucks later she felt a 100% better, it had been a stomach virus that the mosquitos down here have been carrying so it pays to shop around and find a vet your comfortable with and you dog likes as well!

Our vet for Diesel is GREAT! It's almost an hour's drive away, but well worth it. A lot of boxers go to this particular vet and both vets are wonderful with our baby. It's $17 for an office visit and about $7 for shots. The vets normally take about 30 minutes with Diesel and of course, he LOVES the attention that he gets from all of the staff! When we called other vets to see how much they would charge to dock his tail, we were priced anywhere from $190 - $220, but our vet charged us $35!!!! He even makes house calls for people who can't make it to him....he is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have mixed emotions as well concerning vet offices.

I do shop around and compare constantly. I have found one vet that does heartworm checks and the heartworm prevention to be MUCH cheaper than another in the same area. Sometimes vaccinations vary from office to office. Then when it comes to specialty stuff I look at whom I`m most comfortable with in handling my crew, the experience that they have, alone with the equipment needed to perform what I need done at the time.

I DO prefer to have one office handle everything for my dogs but the vet office I currently use has gotten so expensive on regular vet work that I am finding myself venturing out to less expensive vets for the same issues (for example the cost of vaccinations and heartworm prevention).

You would think I would get a discount with the amount of Boxers that I have but believe me, I get NONE!
