What are your vet costs (kinda long)

Well some numbers from Boston, one of the priciest regions on the planet (second maybe to Manhattan and San Francisico (you know, lame-o starter houses are around $300k plus). Anyway, my vet charges a $37 office visit charge. He never charges us a "return or recheck" visit. If we go back for the same thing (which we do VERY often like with Emma's allergies) he doesn't charge us. Now, that isn't to say that I don't spend a ton of money at the vet, cause i do. I don't think I've ever gone and paid less than maybe $120, with the more common charge being around 175-200 dollars for various things. I can't think of the vacc. prices, or med prices off the top of my head. I think spay is $250, her allergy test was $250. Also, if I'm worried about her, like a cut or a bang or something, he'll let me bring her in on the fly and will check her out and not charge me anything. In sum, he gives me lots of breaks, but I go there so often that he still makes plenty off of me.

I just took my female for her yearly Check up and all Shots except Kennel Cough (she just had it in March 04) and the exam was $26 and the shots were I think $28 with a $9 fee for waste disposal. So her total was $63 and the exam was pretty extensive. It was similar to a woman's Yearly Gyno Exam. Usually if I have to take her for anything that comes up during the year there is only a fee for the meds if needed or very small exam fee of $10 if no meds are involved. When she had Pancreatitis I was only charged for her blood work and the meds no exam fee at all. I guess I'll count myself in as one of the lucky ones.

On another note, I just called to price out neutering, and with all of their extra fees etc. it is going to be over $400! :eek:
Do you have a local spay/neuter clinic(low cost) type thing ? I contacted our local clinic (Central Indiana Spay/Neuter Clinic) and was told it would only be $60 to have Keno neutered...I believe it's a little cheaper because he won't stay the night unless there are complications...otherwise he'll be able to come home that evening....our local vet is one of the less expensive vets in town and they said that it would be $120 to have Keno neutered there (and they don't keep the animal all night either--not even if it's a female--we had Daisy spade there & she came home that afternoon)...so my suggestion is to look for special organizations who offer low cost spaying/neutering

BeckyNC - just wondering, these place are just like "clinics" that neuter/spay for cheaper right? then you just resume your normal vet visits? I was just wondering, that would be a great way to save money after I lay out this little chunk of change for out little baby. Thanks for the tip!

Seems quite expensive BUT....The hours are great, the entire staff is wonderful, I have Dr.s home phone numbers, cell phone numbers and e-mail addy's as well.
They call "just out of the blue" to see how both the dog and cat are doing. They never make me feel rushed, always get me in the same day if it is even a "minor" emergency, answer all of my questions thoroughly, listen to my suggestions and opinions etc....

The location is not the most convienent for me and I also think that the facility is in need of a makeover but you can't judge a book by it's cover. The practice is owned by a retired vet professor from Ohio State University who is a holistic vet and the other 4 vets there each specialize in a certain field. They send gifts for referrals and really do what they can to make you feel appreciated. So, I guess it's not all about the money. IMO.

Before I found them I was taking my girls to another location that was alot cheaper. Fancy facility, near home and very convienent. Then through an open door I witness a neutering of a male cat that was not fully anetisized (sp?)....that was my last visit there.

ours is reasonable. He's wonderful and he owns boxers too so i think he gives us a break...Konah was neutered last friday and the toal cost including the neuter, 21 days of Ivomectin (for his almost-gone demodex), 4 days of anti-inflammatories and pain killers and taxes was 221$ Canadian oh and they gave us an elizabethan collar at no charge.

Konah absolutely loves it there and the staff are wonderful. One of them is his "Auntie" and he beans and wiggles like crazy for her. She keeps saying we can go on vacation any time and she'll just take him home with her...but we might not get him back *L*. Overall i think our vet charges us way under what some would...i heard him say about the ivomectin (last month) that it costs him 50$ so make it as close as possible and the charge was 52.18!

He's wonderful.

Jen- definitely shop around...that price is ridiculous! I'm sure the humane society in Calgary would do it cheaper and their vets are pretty good too.

My vet is a boxer owner so I trust him greatly, he is wonderful with both of my dogs and is known in town as the "boxer guy" or the boxer vet. Most of his clients are boxer owners too!

He charges $47 for a consult (but does not have a time limit, he will talk to you for 1/2 hour or more if needs be)
Having Tyson's lump removed including anesthetic, having it tested and after care in the clinic was just under $300 (they didnt charge me for the initial consult to look at the lump! which was great!)

Shots are $69
and a spay is from $225-250 (depending on weight)

he is a great vet and doesn't make you do all kinds of expensive things, and has a great knowledge of the breed.

Our old vet clinic had 3 vets they were good but they cost over $60 to see, they always wanted to do blood work, and charged a referral fee to send you to the University of Guelph.. no matter what I went there for it seemed to cost me over $200 by the time I was ready to walk out, and I found I still had more questions than answers. They were also very pushy about doing dental work, they always thought every dog and cat needed dental work.. even if they didnt.. so I decided to change vets.

Yes, it's only a clinic for spaying/neutering & then you would just see your vet for everything else...If I remember right, Petsmart offers low cost vaccinations thru out the year, so that might be an option as far as puppy shots go...wish I would have remembered that when we took Keno to get his puppy shots :rolleyes: Good thing our vet is very reasonable !

I pay $48 for an office visit - so by the time we get any medications etc its over $100 before I leave, last night we had a re-check visit so I only got charge $28 for the office visit. Our vet is in Lancaster MA and its similar in surrounding towns :(

I guess I'm lucky - - my mom works for a vet so I get the family discount Also, because my mom works with the Golden Retriever Rescue- she brings any shots home. The only time Adam has been to the vet was for his neuter. We have a No More Homeless Pets program- twice a year they have vets around the State that will charge $30 for a spay or neuter!!!!! I did have to pay like $10 extra cuz Adam is so big, and for a few stitches.
