For my baby boxer. I am getting him on Friday and am going baby shopping Friday during the day.

I already have a crate for him set up in my hubsands and I bedroom for the first few nights(lucky DH is on travel for 2 weeks).

What kind of toys should I get him?

I have a 3 year old cocker spaniel and who is a big baby and hates toys so I have nothing for entertaining the new boy.

When does the energy start to come with them? He plays now, but nothing like the breeders adult dogs.

Congratulations on your new puppy! cool2icon

We had tons of toys at Mason's disposal when he was a puppy. His favorite indoor toys are his stuffed toys with sqeakers, or whatever noise make that the manufacturer put in. We gave him hard bones when he was teething, under watchful supervision. You should keep away from rope toys since they can unravel the rope and get it stuck in their intestines...actually you should keep an eye on all his toys and if he starts destroying them, throw them away. At first I bought expensive toys, but then after watching them get ripped up, I quickly learned! Mason's favorite outdoor toys are soccer like balls and frisbee - your new puppy is still too little for these - just an idea for when he's older. Having a lot of toys around helped to since if Mason tried to eat any of our stuff, we gave him one of his toys to teach him what was his to chew.

I think Mason started to get his energy between 3-4 months. I think someone else can help out here because I can't remember exactly.

Good luck with your new puppy! You and your DH must be very excited...I can't wait to see the picutures and hear the stories I'm sure you'll have to tell!

Also there is a stuufed toy (I forget the name), in the shape of a dog bone, that you can pour water over place in the zip lock bag included and freeze it. Bodie loved it when he was teething as it must have been soothing for him. And the Kong, they now have one that is for young puppies to help with teething. You can put small bones in it, peanut butter, etc and it will keep the pup busy for a long time. Good luck and just keep asking questions, everyone here has a lot of information.

Oh the bone that goes into the freezer is a new one since Mason was a puppy! I've never heard of that one...and I forgot about the kong too! Mason still loves his kong!

Oh how fun!! Our Rudy is only 14 weeks and I already miss those first few weeks when he was really a baby! All the other posts have good advice and here's my 2cents:

I remember being surprised by how much Rudy just wanted to be with us. We'd bought him some cool toys (many of the ones mentioned above) but it was almost like he had to learn to play with toys instead of his littermates. It took him a few days until he figured out how to have fun with them. After about 2 weeks we saw a dramatic increase in his energy level.

2)I recommend having some very soft chew toys at first. Rudy really loved chewing on some large towel scraps. We also gave him smallish beanie babies (only when closely supervised) because they make a great noise when you toss them around and some other stuffed animals bought at a thrift store. He's just recently discovered the joy of a good Kong and wouldn't touch the nylabone..I think they were just too tough. Another great toy was a ball with large sand or something in it that is about the size of a tennis ball and makes a cool rattling sound when it rolls

Enjoy!

Diesel just loves her fleece toy with the squeaker....just enough stuffing in it and no button eyes or other parts to come off. Must be the texture of the fleece or something cause her fleece toys are always the first out of her toy box. Her very first toy was a small rubber type toy in the shape of Garfield...still is one of her favorites. Enjoy your new baby!

I like the nylabone and the kongs! Of course Angel never really played much with toys until Frank came around and then she must have thought "hey those are mine" LOL! She really did like the nylabone for young pups though.
Congrats on your new baby! :)
