What are some examples of 'good' cameras - but not OVERLY expensive?!

It's a good one! The learning curve is a bit steeper than say a Canon Rebel, since the Rebel line is manufactured more for consumer-level photographers, with less options but much easier-to-navigate menu and settings. The 40D will give you more options but is not quite as "user-friendly." Back when I was in the market for a camera, I chose the 40D (which was about $1300 body-only when I bought it :eek
because I had been using that camera while working at a photography studio, and had already learned it pretty well. If you are willing to put in some time to play around with it and learn the settings, you should be OK... but if you're not already camera-savvy and don't have a ton of time to devote to learning then I'd stick with something from the Rebel line.

so I found a Nikon D3000 on CL that is $380. Apparently it is brand new and never used - it was a present for him and he already had one.
It is all in bags, etc. in the picture. Is that a good camera?
it also Includes 18-55mm VR lens. (I dont' know what this means...LOL)

That sounds decent, if it is truly in-the-box unopened/unused.
(If it's not then you might pass on this one for a brand new one, as I'm seeing that this camera/lens combo is going for not much more than that on websites such as BestBuy.com).BTW, 18-55mm (millimeters) is the zoom length of the lens -- this particular length seems to be standard for kit lenses on cropped sensor cameras -- and "VR" stands for "Vibration Reduction" (which you will only see this term used for Nikon lenses; Canon uses the term "Image Stabilization" (abbreviated "IS") for their lenses, VR and IS are basically the same thing

one of my friend who is also a professional photographer told me that the lenses sold in the kit are not great. She recommend buying a canon or nikon body only, and then a lense elsewhere.
she recommended me the Canon Rebel 450D - but i can't find it.. I believe it is now the Rebel T3i? ...
She told me she used a Tamron lense she particularly liked with her Canon 450D.
I would copy/paste what she said, but it's in French
She also told me like you said, Zoe, the 40D is too advanced and i should start on the rebel...
Now, on the look out of the good deal..
I am leaning towards Canon, because i've always had Canon cameras. Also, the Nikon cameras are heavier.
I feel the reviews that compare Nikon and Canon are mostly based on brand loyalty.. (reminds me of the was apple/pc - it's only a matter of preference and what we are used to)

True about the kit lenses, but personally I don't think that they're SO bad that even beginners should avoid them. I have two kit lenses, which although now I'm looking for bigger and better ones, they were just fine to learn on. However if you want a slight upgrade from the kit lenses, I'd recommend (like your friend said) an off-brand zoom lens like Tamron or Sigma with a constant aperture -- in other words, ONE number following the "f/" in the title, rather than 2 numbers. For example, the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 has a constant maximum aperture of 2.8; the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 has a maximum aperture of 2.8 at the wide end only, and a max. aperture of 4.5 at the telephoto end. You WANT constant aperture zooms.
The Canon 450D is the Canon Rebel XSi, which is not a new camera, so you should be able to find very good deals on it.
And I would also agree with you Chrystel that reviews on Canon vs. Nikon are largely based on brand loyalty.

Just went to Nat Camera Exchange today. I wasn't looking to spend a ton, as I'm a student and money is tight. But at the same time, I want quality shots.
I went with the Rebel Xti (which my fiancé also has, didn't realize!) and I am so happy already. It works with the lens from my 35mm so didn't have to buy a lens. I was looking at the T2 but the guy there said it wasn't worth the money and if I wanted that line just to go straight to the T3. But again, I don't have that money
. Already have quite a few shot of Zoe
Next thing to buy is a macro lens. They are so expensive though! We already have a telephoto (Tamron) that works awesome but macro lenses seem to run from 300 on up to 1000+.
As far as Canon vs Nikon it really comes down to personal preference I think. I prefer Canon but I think there are ups and downs to both major competitors in the DSLR market.
