What are some examples of 'good' cameras - but not OVERLY expensive?!

Anyway - I'll keep my mouth shut on this thread - but I want to THANK everyone for giving me some ideas of things to work on/get into.

I definitely can't sew - so that is out. I do LOVE taking pictures and with all the fosters around it would be nice to have a good camera to use! I just don't know much about lenses, cameras, etc.

Maybe I'll do some research on this and put a good camera on my christmas list!

I have a Nikon D5000 that I love! I got it for Christmas last year. We did quite a bit of online shopping. We found a great deal last year which was a bit more than I wanted to spend. We got the camera, 2 lenses (18-55 and 55-200), and 3 filters for just over $820. I can also shoot video with this camera and has vibration reduction. Plus this kit came with 2 dvd's on how to take oic's, tho' I haven't taken time to watch them.

I just got a Nikon p80
( CL for a few hundred ( used EXCELLENT condition) I am so soso sos in LOVE with this camera ~~ It basically is a advanced point in shot or entry pro cam ! so many setting to play with , but u also can set to auto ! I have gotten some stunning pics already ! ( have had about 3 days ) still havent even read the book .... i am FINALLY able to get the pics with the "subject" crystal clear & background a bit blurry !!!!!

new they retail around 600.00

I have had dozens of expensive " point n shoot " but this by far is my fav !!

Canon Rebel is a great starter camera that's a step up from the point and shoot.

Fortunately for new buyers cameras (like other electronics) depreciate in value pretty quickly, so you could easily find one that's just over a year old for a great deal, either on Craigslist or even at a store. Just because it doesn't feature the newest technology or have the max number of megapixels on the market today, doesn't mean it's a bad camera. For a beginner, you really can't go wrong with anything by Nikon or Canon. Both of these brands have very extensive lines so if you really get into photography you will have plenty of room to grow and expand from what you have.

I have the same dilemma in my head on which camera to get. Especially can't decide between Canon and Nikon. I've had a Canon film and now I have a point and shoot Canon. I was thinking I should try nikon for a change?
I am glad some of you mentioned CL. I have seen good deal on there, wasnt sure if buying second hand camera would be smart...

Do you have interchangeable lenses for your Canon film camera? If so, those could also be used on a Canon DSLR.

My grandfather recently gave me his old film Nikon with several lenses... I wish I could use them with my DSLR but mine is a Canon, so they don't fit =/

I have the same as Glatorblu and I find the shots amazing. I have a basic lense and its good for now but id love to change!! But all in all I find my Nikon great!
