We Need to Make a Decision about Woody

As I write this my eyes are filling with tears. My 10 year old baby, Woody, has changed tremedously in the past couple of weeks. Last year he was diagnosed with Boxer Cardiomyopathy and had been doing well until recently. Everything about him has changed. He hardly wags his tail or eats, he's been urinating in the house, he's been growling at anyone who comes to our house -- even people he knows. The biggest thing is that we believe he has lost his eyesight. He has been walking into furniture and also he flinches when I try to pet him. I don't think he sees me when I go to pet him. I think that he is really miserable and I think we need to put him down. It breaks my heart but I realize that all the money in the world to various specialists won't make him a puppy anymore. I don't know if I'm posting this so y'all can tell me that I'm crazy or that y'all will validate my feelings so I don't feel so heartless and guilty. Thanks for listening to me. Faith

I am so sorry to hear about woody. with that said at 10 years and cardiomyopthy he has had a long life. as sad as it is you will know when the time is right. my vet told me a long time ago with my dalmation who was 14 to write down all the things she loved to do. when she could no longer do those things it would be time. it is always so hard to say good bye to our babies angelicon please give woody a big hug and lots of kisses from my clan.

Faith,

It is not for me or anyone else to judge the decisions you make about your loved baby. You and only you are with Woody every day. Bless you during this time and my thoughts are with you.

In October of 2004 our Taj who was 18 had a stroke. She had lost her eyesight and ran into everything. She pottied in the house which she would never have done if she was feeling well. Our kids had rescued her from being drown in the river. I will never forget the day they brought her home crying and begging that we take her. How could we say no? I am so happy we chose to adopt Taj. She made us laugh everyday, cuddled with us when we were ill or well, kept the children busy and gave us lots of memories.

The day we knew it was time to help her was very sad for our whole family. We were not ready to let her go and say good bye. But, she taught us a big lesson--to let go with love!!

Our hearts are with you. What ever you decide just know you are doing it for him. Peace to you. You are in our thoughts.

Only you will really know when it's time. If their life is truly miserable, it's probably time. What does your vet say?

Thank you for your kind words and understanding. I haven't spoken to my vet about the most recent medical isuues with Woody. Again I will sound heartless but nothing we do medically can bring him back. I am going to call my vet tomorrow and speak with him about what's going on. He's a wonderful man and has always been very supportive and loving. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again, Faith

I'm very sorry to hear that Woody isn't doing well. It's such a hard decision for us to make, no matter how old they are. Trust in your heart and trust in Woody...he will let you know. When Cadence was sick, I asked her oncologist when I should know it would be time to put her down. She told me we had a while yet. That was a Thursday. By Sunday evening, Cadence was losing her sight and was crashing into things. Her nubbin stopped wagging and she stopped eating. I'll never forget as long as I live...we were in the kitchen and she was stumbling and I grabbed her and she looked up at me and I just knew. I told her "okay girl. It will be okay now." I made her appointment the next day and I lost her the following day. It broke my heart and even as I write this, tears are running down my face. But I knew she was tired, and I trusted her to show me the way and she did, brave till the very end. Your Woody will do the same for you...just trust him.
I send you and your family many hugs and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear about Woody, I know what you are going through, it's really awful. We felt exactly the same way when Morrissey was ill, He was 11 and had a brain tumor, the vet said there was nothing anyone could do and he would get worse and to think about having him put to sleep, through many, many tears we battled with the right thing to do, I just wanted a miracle pill to make our baby better, actually I couldn't even think straight.
Very quickly it got to the point where he couldn't get up and I would have to pull him on his comforter to the back door and somehow, don't know how I did it, held him up outside to go to the bathroom, more for his dignity than anything else.
He looked so sad it broke our hearts, he would just lie there all day, there was no life left in his eyes, I would lay with him and cry, we had to hold his head up to eat and drink, then we knew 100 percent it was time to let him go. I truly believe it comes down to quality of life and that you will know when the time is right, your heart will let you know and Woody will let you know.
I swear Morrissey knew when I told him, we have to let you go baby.
Everyday I don't even question if we did the right thing and that gives me some peace.
I wish I could take your pain away, We felt the same way, guilty, heartless etc, I think those are normal feelings. You'll know what to do when the time comes, Sending you and your family lot's of hugs and I'll be thinking of you, take care and kisses to Woody.
Kate, Morrissey's mommy.
