Wanting to Adopt a boxer

I am looking for a female boxer.....I am willing to travel..I live in the north western part of KY....I only want to adopt from a kill shelter or someone who wants there precious baby to have good home because they can no longer keep her.......The reason I am wanting one is because my boy needs a playmate...Although we play with him everyday I think having another boxer would only improve his happiness even more....I love him sooooo much and want only the best for him.....Allison :D

Allison - Have you checked Petfinder? You can do a search through shelters for Boxers. Also, there are classified ads where people list animals they are giving up.

Yes I look on petfinder all the time....I am not keen on rescue places a friend of mine had one she had to give up due to health (before I knew her) and the female boxer was up to date on shots and fixed.....and they still asked for $200. for her and it took longer to find her home then if she would have advertised in the local paper.....So I am not wanting one from them....Only a kill shelter or someone's personal pet

I'm sorry that your friend had a bad experience with rescue, but that doesn't mean that all rescues are bad. Also, advertising in a paper is never a good idea in my opinion. You never know that type of people that your pet is going to. Keep checking petfinder. We found Zander that way from an all-breed rescue. I wouldn't turn down the chance to get a good, loving boxer because the shelter isn't a kill shelter. Of coarse, saving a life is wonderful, but all shelter dogs deserve a loving home. Being in a shelter for too long can be very tramatic for an animal. I hope that you find one soon to love.

Adoption fees from Boxer Rescue groups only HELP cover (defry) the actual cost(s) to have the boxer brought up current on vaccines, spay/neuters, heartworm testing, stool checks, and anything else that particular dog might need. Most of the time, the adoption fees do NOT even cover the actual costs.

Its also not uncommon for a rescue group to spend $300 & up for EACH dog(s) in their program to get them into adoptable condition.

Rescue is a labor of love.......not a money making scheme.
Most rescue groups are non-profit organizations also, or they are in the process of getting all the paperwork together for their non-profit status.

I AGREE WITH SABRINA, THE ADOPTION FEES DON'T COME CLOSE TO COVERING THE EXPENSE OF A RESCUE ORGANIZATION. WHILE A RESCUE MAY NOT HAVE MUCH MONEY IN AN OWNER SURRENDER, THEY MAAY HAVE AN LARGE AMOUNT IN A DOG PULLED FROM A SHELTER. WE CAN ONLY HOPE THET IT EVENS OUT OVER THE LONG RUN. PLACES WITH A LARGE BASE OF SUPPORT IN FUNDING AND HELP ARE LUCKEY BUT NOT THE NORM, A LOT OF US RUN WITH A SMALL NUMBER OF PROPLE AND NOT MUCH MONETARY SUPPORT.

A good majority of the boxers that are in rescue come from kill shelters. Rescue organizations, as said above, are 501(c)(3) non profit organizations registered through the IRS. In no way do we ever turn over a profit. For instance, say you pay $200 for a 2 year old boxer from rescue. This dog is going to come to you spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and a negative heartworm test, most likely crate trained with basic obedience training (sit etc.), with a leash and collar set and usually a month or two worth of heartworm prevention. This dog will also have had a health screening by a vet so you will be aware of any health issues that arose. Quite a bargain for $200 if you ask me. You can now see why rescue organizations often never have enough money and are in constant need of donations. If you find a boxer in a shelter, please do adopt him but do not discount rescue if you are unable to locate one. Best of luck!

The majority of boxers we recieve in rescue are heartworm positive. So we need to get them started on treatment right away. Heartworm treatment is a long process which can sometimes last over 6 weeks :eek: which adds up to way more than $200. This isn't just for one boxer we normally have several at one time going through this. A lot of us volunteers also pay for things out of our pocket and don't even think twice about reimbursement.

Like Aimee mentioned before with rescue dogs most of the work is done healthwise already by the rescue. So for $200 you are getting around $800-$1000 worth of medical care assuming the dog is heartworm free. Add a few extra hundrad if it was treated for heartworm.

I am sorry your friend had a bad expierence but try talking to some other people about rescue as well.

Allison-I don't know how far away you are, but the Humane Association of Butler County in Trenton, OH has some boxers listed on petfinder. There is a brindle male and a fawn female. They also have a brindle male listed as a mix, but he just looks like a boxer with a natural tail.
