Yeah for Joe! That is such a great story. Wishing you the best of luck with your new addition to the family and many happy years together. He sounds like a doll face! I cant wait to see pictures.

I got tears in my eyes too!!!
When you told how he responded to your daughter that did it. Often a dog is depressed and not itself in a shelter. That incident brought his emotions to the forefront.
I am so happy for Joe that you took a chance for him!

I had a foster, who was about 5-6 that I kept who had a wry mouth. She made the funniest faces. Oh how we loved that lady. Often her tongue hung out the side or stuck out the front a tiny bit. The first few days she was with me, my dogs chased her around and wanted to see what was going on with her tongue!

Congratulations to your whole family!

and always by Jagger and Gabby, my angels at the bridge

I wanted to give you all an update!!!

Today we got a clean bill of health from the vet! partyicon

We took Joe-Joe for a physical and the vet said that he is in really good health for his age. He puts him at about 8 years old. He said that although he is missing teeth on the side of his mouth that is wry, the teeth he does have are clean and in good condition so to try regular food instead of watering it down like the shelter suggested.(He gets kibble mixed with canned, so it is soft-moist anyway.) He said that Joe does have an ear infection and gave us some cream, but other than that he looks good. As for the possible kidney problems the shelter director mentioned, my vet looked at the tests their vet had previously done and said that considering Joe's age they look normal and he wouldn't worry about it. He and the nurse were impressed with how well the old boy sat and let them do everything even his vaccinations and said that he couldn't believe that someone would abandon such a great old dog.

On a funnier note, I have two quick stories about adjusting to life with Joe. I have been reading all the threads about boxers and gas, and Joe's tummy is adjusting to a food change so we are experiencing that problem first hand. He cut loose in the vets office today and fumigated the whole place and my poor husband just tried to sit there nonchalantly and pretend that it wasn't him or his dog. LOL I told him that it was penance for all the times HE has done that to me!

Also, we have had a big warm up here and gone from sub zero temps to almost in the 40's and Joe is feeling his oats. I put my slip-on, open backed clogs to run him out to potty today and he decided that he wanted to walk to the park behind our house. The sidewalks are melting off and he needs excercise so I thought that it was a good idea. When we got to the park, he went off the path, which usually means that he is going to go potty so I followed him into the snow(4-6 inches) just to let him potty. He went #1 and then kind of kept sniffing and slowly inching further from the path so I figured he wanted to go #2. Well he ended up taking me completely across the field and around in a big circle and back to my house through the deep snow in my clogs with 1 inch of snow packed under my heels and frozen feet from wading through the deep stuff. I never did find out what he was tracking, but I did find out that he is strong, he practically pulled me up the hill we had to climb to get home. I think I need one of those adjustable leashes that reel out and then come back in! I'm also still not quite sure, who was walking who either!

I am sooo happy for you guys, especially Joe! We adopted a young female over the weekend too. They are smarter than we give them credit for. They know they were chosen! And they can be very greatful. Good luck and be blessed. Stacy

What a beautiful story....

In your first post, when you got to the part where you were taking Joe back to his kennel, and noticed the boxer mix pup, I was actually thinking No! No! not the pup. So, when you got to the part about how he reacted when your daughter was knocked over, I gave a sigh of relief!! Thank goodness Joe showed his true loyal self at that time. And bless all of you for deciding to share your life with Joe. By reading your updates, it sounds like you are truly smitten with this boxer boy. Please keep us updated on how things are going. I am sooo happy for all of you, but most of all Joe.

Kudos to you, your hubby and your 3 children.

Your home will never be the same ever again , but your lives will be all the richer, for having adopted Joe. :)

If only the world had more people just like yourselves.........

I had the same reaction as Jean when I read about the Boxer Mix part........:)
Believe me when I say that you will always be so grateful that you were adopted by Joe..........life for you has changed irreversibly (for the better). Boxer love is really something :)
