I hope that you will be able to be seen by the vet today and that she will be okay. Please keep us posted on how she is doing.

Update on my baby!

HI everyone, first let me thank you all for your support and help, it's so nice to know there are so many kind hearted people out there to help when you need it!

Here is the update, we made an appointment for Roxie for 10:30 am, she was great this morning, almost back to normal. She took a little nap on the couch at about 8:30am, waiting for her appointment, when she woke up her face was swolen to 2x it's normal size, looked like she just went 8 rounds with mike tyson. I rushed her in immediately, after lots of tests and some doggie benedryl, turns out she got some sort of virus (can't think straight right now so i can't think of the name) that dogs can only get from drinking contaminated water!!!!! The swelling is going down pretty quickly now, thank goodness.

You will be happy to also know, that through all of this, she is still the most loveable, sweetest dog, and has kept her happy-go-lucky boxer disposition.

Now i have to see if my face swelling will go down from all the crying i've done all day long.... :)

thanks again--- from lauren and from Roxie!

Sending out loads of healing vibes to your baby girl, Roxie, and hope she is doing better very soon. Yes, it is so scary and upsetting when our babies aren't well. Hope you are also doing better now that she has been to the vet, you know what's wrong with her and she's being treated. Get well soon, Roxie!

Was the virus Giardia by chance? Nasty little critters that virus is. Does all kinds of things to our babies.....and us if we catch it from them.

I hope she is feeling better each day. She will be back to normal in no time!!!

I was thinking Giardia...my Laila had it last summer...the thing is she didn't have any symptoms but the vet picked it up on a fluke at the yearly stool check...took that powdered med and next stools were clear...
Sorry your baby was so sick and gave you a scare...but great that your back on track!!appicon

yes, it was Giardia! How the heck did she get that, we don't have a fenced in yard so we always have her on a walk, i don't live in a rural area at all either? AND! she is such a priss she doesn't even walk through puddles she steps over them! :) i hear eating rabbit poo, anyone heard that. Anywho, she is better, all swelling gone, normal stool, eating and playing like a champ! Not interested in a walk though, kinda hot here, maybe it is bothering her? I'm not going to force her, she'll go when she is ready.

Thanks again, i am so grateful for this website.

Giardia is not a virus ;) It is a protozoa - closer to parasite than virus. Contaminated water is one way that it spreads, but there are plenty more - including faeces and soil. Unfortunately, that means that you need to be very careful about where your dog eliminates - it should NOT be in public places, or you risk spreading the infection to other people's dogs (and in turn reinfecting your own at a later date). You probably are also going to have to look at disinfecting your own yard, or wherever it is your dog currently defacates. Otherwise, again, its going to be very difficult to get rid of as he would continuously be reinfected.

One last thing - you should probably be very fatidious about your own hygiene (washing hands after handling the dog, etc) as it is not clear whether or not this infection can be passed from dog to humans.

Some more information about giardia here: Giardia canis in Dogs

Gmac, thanks for the clarification. There is no proof that it can be transferred to humans, but my brother can attest it is possible. LOL He got it a week after his Saint was diagnosed. My bro's symptoms was worse than the dog's. It was like an extreme case of stomach flu with the most horrible cramps and diarrhea. Proof or not, taking care of your own hygiene when handling a sick dog is great advice!
