She wasn't asking advise or opinions about breeding.....

No, she was asking advice on how much "compensation" she could seek based on how much money she could have made by turning her un-shown, un-tested dog into a breeding machine. An opportunity that has now been removed by the spaying of her dog. It's not exactly surprising that people here find that concept extremely distasteful.

If the OP was seriously considering that future for her dog, then she is or was about to become a backyard breeder of the worst type. Who wouldn't be glad the poor dog has been saved from that fate? And if she wasn't going to breed anyway, then seeking ideas on how to get the maximum amount of compensation out of the vet based on a fictitious scenario is a dishonest, opportunistic money-grab.

With regard to the amended question of how to prevent this sort of thing happening again - well, you can't. People make mistakes, and it's hardly the sort of thing vets go around doing for fun. It costs them time and money doing operations they can't charge for. I'd accept the free spay, hopefully free teeth cleaning too and any other discounted care they may offer. But as for "compensation" for the future litters of a bitch that should never have been bred anyway - forget it. That's just blatant opportunism and worse.

As someone stated before, I believe this poor bitch has a guardian angel looking over her. Thank goodness for her. I'm so glad she doesn't have to become a breeding machine in the future as is the fate for so many owned by BYBs. I think that the vet making the mistake and spaying her is the lesser of two evils here. Just my 2 cents.

i think it is wrong to assume that she meant otherwise - she even had to edit her post so that people would stop assuming things, which most are still doing..

we don't know what her circumstances are - maybe she wanted to show, maybe she just didn't have the money to get the pup spayed (which you got it for free so that is good at least)! :)

i think the real issue here is that the vet did the wrong procedure. i have heard of things like this before and i think that there is aboslutely no excuse for it. i don't think the mother is to blame...when Asia was spayed, i went in, told them what she was there for, stayed until she went in the back room, and left; i had to go to my 9.30am class! i couldn't have stayed plus it's not like i was allowed to go in the back.

what if a dog is dropped off at the vet's office and the mom tells them specifically what she is there for (although the nurse should already have it in the dog's file along with in the appointment book), then the mom leaves to go next door to run a couple of errands (b/c you know how long a comp exam can take). so, the vet opens up the dog to try and take out a tumor or something (i don't even know if that is a real procedure...) and he's like 'oops, this is the wrong dog, i was supposed to just give this dog a comp. exam'! that is the mothers fault? i don't think so - she did her part, and the Dr. was supposed to do his and failed.

i think this guy's practice should probably be reported, although not sued or anything, because you wouldn't want that happening to other people's animals, and it could have very well happenned many times before and that will encourage other people to come forward.

*i have a story, although it is not about dogs. my grandpa had been going to this one doctor for years - he diagnosed him with alzheimers. well the medicine he was given just made him real goofy - he often forget where the bathroom was, poor guy. so my mom took him to her doctor, he ran some tests and found that my grandpa had diabetes and his levels were so out of whack, that my grandpa was basically walking into his own coma. my mom didn't want to sue this guy, but she did take the time to report him so it would not happen to others (the point of my story) and found that he had diagnosed the majority of his elderly patients with alzheimers and a tiny amount less than one half of them really had diabetes - they were misdiagnosed and you know when an older person has diabetes, that is not something to mess around with ...

i think that you have a good reason to report his practice, although you got a pretty good deal on a spay ;)

I am going to chime in here again. I saw the original post before the OP edited it and she was asking for herself, she never once said other people were telling her to do this, she wanted to know how much money she could get for each puppy in the litter that never happened and how many puppies she could expect per litter and how many times the dog could be bred. BYB for sure. It was HER questions and not once did she mention that other people thought that she should do this. As for Cody061004 I don't think they realize that the original post has been edited. If you read the post as it is now, yes I can understand why people think we are being too judgemental, but in my opinion had they read the original post as I did they would maybe see it in a different light. I stand by my statement, that dog had a guardian angel looking out for her. She was going to be used as a breeding machine and its as simple as that. JMO

i, too, saw the original post, but because the original poster went back and edited it, and because i don't know her personally (and i'm also not one to judge), i'm going to give her the benefit of a doubt, and say she changed her mistakes in her first (original) post specifically because she did not want people to think she was going to turn into or had plans to be a back yard breeder.

i can see how the original post would make people think otherwise, but she changed it...that should say something - i say give her a little credit, we don't know her situation...

Well, I don't feel that I am being Judgmental at all. Her question was about the vet.
Actually, NO. Her original question was about money. How much could she sue her vet based on breeding her bitch several times and selling lots of puppies. Advice was given to her on both fronts both the vet's mistake and her own planned future mistake.

The OP is upset on 2 fronts. The understandable one of "OMG, what did you do to my dog!!??". I would have been furious also. But the other greedy and irresponsible one of "I was planning to breed my girl, over and over again, so how much money can I sue for."

The reasons the OP changed her post are her own. It is probably good she did because an even bigger firestorm would have ensued and I am fairly confident such a post is against Boxerworld's rules. She may have even been kicked off the forum had she persued such an greedy angle.

Regardless, people are offering their opinions in a public forum. Most are offers their thoughts and suggestions. You claim they are judgemental and you post in the same exact way against those you seek to label. Once again, pot calling the kettle black :)

Actually..

I'm sorry you disagree, but do you take your children to the hospital tell the nurse what you want done & leave. No, I don't think so, thats child abuse. You should never leave a dog either, my dogs are like my children & their Vets know that & they are never too busy that they can't talk to me.You can not take dropping them off, telling them what you want done & come back & the wrong procdure was done & get upset. They do get busy & make mistakes, as we all do. just make sure you are there & most of the time things like this won't happen, & if it does then it is the Vets fault. Hanley

I do see your point as far as dropping off children and leaving them. That is child abuse and should NEVER be done. Yikes! But, this kind of mistake can happen if your present at the vet's office or not. The surgery is behind closed doors and once the dog is under anesthesia, you are not allowed to be around them until after recovery. During the surgery, the vet will not come out to talk to you. This happened behind closed doors and the mistake was made whether she was there or not. You the client, have no control as to what happens when they close that door on you and tell you to wait in the waiting area, or go home until they call you. The mistake SOLEY lies on the vets hands. Eithor, he didn't read the file, or he read the WRONG file...bottom line. Doctors are highly trained to analyze and read files, x-rays etc. Since this girl was going to be used for BYB, then I am happy he performed this mistake:)

We had a cat when I was a kid. Mum took it to the vets to be destroyed (because it had bitten my dad and me quite seriously, needing stitches).... they rang mum the next day to say that the cat was ready to be picked up, and had been spayed! Mum was devastated as she felt bad enough about the whole thing as it was..... Luckily it wasn't the other way around!!!!!
