Back from the vet
Hi all,
Thanks again for your kind words of support. When I spoke with Poison Control they advised that sharpie's generally will not cause dogs to become ill. Taya chewed on two or three permanent (stinky) markers that contained toluene and xylene, which are quite toxic.
As per usual when we took her to the vet she was much better, barely hacking. None of course when he had a look at her. He thinks that she just has toxic irriation to her upper airway and prescribed her an antihistimane/antiboitic combination. As soon as we returned home, she started hacking again. It's now worse only when she is laying down as she seems to be better when up and mobile. It's like when you have a cold and the mucus drips down the back of your throat causing you to cough all night -that is what is sounds like.
Anyhow, I am feeling a bit more positive and I think she has come a long way since 4 a.m. this morning when she coughed/puked for long periods. I will keep you all updated if anything else changes. Thanks for all your healing vibes and well wishes! So appreciated!

For the future - suggest you keep some charcoal capsules ( ck the local drug store for them or a health food store) in the house in case she eats something again. It absorbs toxins . Give 6 capsules right away and call the vet.
If she is still having problrms I would give her some now too - just as a precautionary

Thanks for the hint on the capsules! I think I will go and get some today. Hubby is at home (as he is sick too) taking care of her. She is still hacking something awful whenever she gets up from laying down. I feel so bad for her, it sounds like it hurts so much! She has five days worth of medication, but I do hope to see some more relief soon! It just does not sound healthy.
On a positive note, she was outside playing with her brother and drinking water. I don't think she has eaten since last night though (except for some treats).

Just had a chance to read the update, I saw this thread this morning and I was curious how it was all going to come out. It figures you rush them to the vet franticly(sp?) and then they don't even do what concerns you. Glad to hear everything is going to be okay, hope she feels better soon!

Guinness recently had a brief bout with kennel cough (he is vaccinated but similar to how flu shots work, you can get a different strain). I took him to the Vet, and of course, NOTHING, not a single cough, hack, dry heave, NOTHING! I kept telling the Vet "really, he has been coughing something awful..."
Well, she told me it is quite common for hacking/coughing symptoms NOT to show up at the Vet because the dog's adreniline gets going, which opens up the airways in the lungs, giving them a brief respite from the coughing.
When we got home, the coughing resumed pretty quickly. (Thankfully he got over it within days, it was mild and brief vs. most stories I've heard of kennel cough).
Anyway - that may explain the lack of symptoms at the Vet and why it comes back full force at home. If it doesn't get better soon maybe you could get it on tape or something so the Vet can hear how bad it is at home.
Guinness and I send our wishes that it clears up rapidly with the meds and that she'll be fully recovered soon.

I would call a poison center if I were you bc I am a worry wart when it comes to my babies.....good luck with whatever you do...
