Very Gasy Puppie

I have a wonderful 12 week old brindle boxer named Halo and a 5 yr old Husky named Lady. Lady is not so bad but Halo has HORRIBLE gas. We feed them both Iams Dog food Lamb and Rice (weight control for Lady, and puppy for Halo). They get a few small Iams weight control biscuits and some chewy treats. They both LOVE rawhide but have neither have had any table scraps. They have gas though big time. Any tips or ideas what I can do so I am not gased out of the room by my girls?? I know dogs have gas from time to time but mannn this is some smelly stuff. HELP.

It's probably the food. Iam's is really not great food. It has way to many grains in it which dogs don't digest very well and they are poor quality grains. There are way better food out there, like Canidae, Innova, Merrick etc. If you click of the Nutrition link up at the top, it will tell you how to find a good food.

If you feed a tablespoon of plain natural yorgurt with each meal, it will help.

I would get them off of the IAMS and on to a good quality dog food ASAP

Unfortunately, IAMS is one of the lowest quality foods out there, and is filled with ingredients that are hard to digest and are common allergens (thus, the bad gas).

www.boxerworld.com/feeding has lots of information on how to choose a good quality dog food, as well as what ingredients you should avoid. You can also do a search on "quality kibble" and you will find lots of specific suggestions.

Wow thanks, I read the nutrition section and had no idea. I have a vet appointment friday for another round of shots I will ask which locally available brand he approves as well but man the iams is pretty bad. Now I wish I would have asked sooner. :(

One other note, I would caution asking your vet (or rather, relying solely on his advice). Vets are not necessarily trained in canine nutrition. Often times, they actually sell most of the lower end foods (IAMS, Science Diet, etc..) and get kick-backs :rolleyes:

Do a lot of research, and you will undoubtedly find a great quality food that is healthy for your pups. Some popular premium kibbles are:

Wellness
chicken Soup
Merrick
Solid Gold
Natures Variety
Nutro Ultra (Ultra line only)

I was just searching Petco (the store near us) for dog foods and reading the ingrediants. It is nearly impossible to find a found that seems good after reading the nutrition page. everything has corn in it, and then all the by-products, yuk. The list really helps I was starting to lose hope. I mearly want the vets' opinion to go along with ours is all. I feel I must do more research.

In my area PetCo's and PetSmarts, the only premium kibble they carry is Nutro ULTRA. You'll have much better luck shopping at a local pet supplies store or feed store.

If you go to the website of many premium kibbles (the ones I listed above, for example), there is a "store locator" feature which will allow you to locate places nearest you.

I also noticed that you said your dogs like rawhide? This is not a good choice. Rawhide is very bad. A choking hazared and it does not digest when swallowed. It sets in their stomach and can cause a build up af bacteria. Just want to let you know.

Wow, I have never heard that about Rawhide, my girls have always enjoyed eating it and the vet said it was okay. Has anyone else ran into problems with rawhide. I know that flavors like BBQ can be explosive but never the plain... great more things to research.

My girls love it but always had problems digesting it. They would wake up in the middle of the night and throw up(of course when in bed w/us).
