Boxer Pal
Hello

Before deciding on a boxer, I visited this forum and got nothing but favorable info on the boxer breed. Since I have purchased a female now 16 weeks. Over all I guess she is pretty good but, she has the tendency to very very energetic. I am madly in love with her personality, looks and very pleased with my purchase. I do have the concern of how hyper she is. Is this common in boxer pups, females, or is it genetic ect. The breeder said they didn't have a problem. I have talked to others that say they haven't either. Help!!!

Yes, it is definitely a boxer trait. Females tend to be calmer than males, but that is not always the case; you still have to consider personality. The two laziest puppies in Caney's litter were both males, and the 2 most energetic pups were a male and a female. Caney fell right in the middle. One of BF's co-workers actually ended up with the one feisty female, and we heard some crazy stories about her over the next year. She was a little terror evilicon Of course, I have no idea what kind of training and exercise the dog was getting, so that could have been a factor too.

Right now your girl needs some good exercise every day, a few short training sessions, and as much stimulation as you can give her. Socialization is extremely important while she is young, and exposure to new sights, sounds, and situations will really help to wear her out. Puppies can get bored with the same old thing every day, the same old toys, etc. If you can't take her out every day, make up a new game or find something new for her to play with. You don't always have to spend money on new toys -- my girls still love playing with the occasional cardboard box, empty milk jug, or old t-shirt we give them.

There are two wonderful articles on socialization in our Training Articles section:

Both of my Boxers are high energy dogs, but Mali, my female, is definitely the wilder one, and she is also a little devil! evilicon She counter surfs, steals shoes, sasses back, and barks. I would say that there are quite a number of board members with very high energy female Boxers. Both of mine settled down somewhat at about 2 years of age.

spanky puts the everready rabbit to shame  he wakes up at 8 and does not stop not even for naps until 9 that night!! he takes two daily walks which i highly recommend, but he doesnt stop. it is a trait of boxers to be very high energy, boxers need to be kept busy so maybe some good toys to keep her busy when you cant play --give spanky a good old squeaky and he will be tossing that thing around up and down the steps and all over the house and i can catch a good 15-20 mins for myself before he decides i need to play also.

Boxers by nature are high energy, but Arabella is a bit over the top. She starting to calm down now and she just turned two. My husband found a way to burn up some of her energy. He stands or sits at the top of the stairs and throws her toy down. After running up and down the stairs for 15-20 times she wears out. I wish we had figured this out 6 months earlier than we did!

SweetCody

As everyone else has said, Boxers are very high energy. My Cody has calmed down considerably since he turned two, but he still plays quite a bit. My baby girl is pure naughty evilicon . She is in to everything 24/7. I swear she is ADHD. You can look at her anytime of day and just see her mind moving 100mph. She is always looking for the next thing to get into. The one plus is she spends a lot of time harassing Cody. But we have found that the laser pointer burns a lot of energy. She also loves to play tug of war. We have several ropes laying around. She will either play alone or get Cody to play. And you can hold on to the end of it while watching TV and she will just pull and play and have the best time. We are also fortunate to live on about 2 acres so every time we go out for potty breaks she burns around the yard for about 10-15 minutes, just running like the hounds of hell were chasing her. My son is ADD and I see a lot of similarities between the two of them, with the determined burning of energy I see them both do.

Good luck, exercise will help immensely.

Coco'smommy

As others have said boxers can be high energy plus she's a puppy. I think most puppies like to play and play. My female is the lazier one but she's almost 5. Our male pup is 7 months old and he does not stop - ever! :) I get a kick out of him. I don't remember Coco being that way but my husband says she was and I have just forgotten. I think you have gotten several good ideas so just go with them and try to wear her out as much as you can. My two will go out in the morning before I leave them to the house all day and just run circles around the back yard, chasing one another. I let them go at that for about 15 minutes or so and they are ready to nap until we start getting home in the afternoon.
