VERY bad day at the vet.

Telmar(21 months) has been favoring his back right leg so i took him today expected there was a piece of glass or something in his paw....come to find out he has hip dysplasia....that was the GOOD news i am sad to say. While doing the exam the vet said 'did you know Telmar has a heart murmur?' I was shocked and dumbfounded. I had no idea of course! I kept myself composed but as soon as i got in the car i just sobbed. We go for bloodwork in jan and will be referred to a heart specialist after that. He said heart murmurs are very common in boxers and we just have to determine WHY he has one to figure out treatment options. Thank goodness for this board....in have seen posts constantly on this topic but have never read....

Oh sweetie I'm sorry to hear about Telmar. Maybe it's a very minor murmur and it won't be a problem. What did they say the treatment for the hip dysplasia is? Maybe you should also get a second opinion. Sorry I can't be more help. Please keep us posted. Heather

How old is Telmar? Murmurs often go away with age right? I hope the news next month is hopeful... And did they say how bad the dysplasia is? I know there are degrees... Farley and I are sending you all good vibes!

oh no!!

wow thats horrible!! i feel so sorry for you, best of luck! i know its probably entirely different, but my cat had a heart murmur as well, and she lived to the ripe old age of 14! we had to put her to sleep near the end, but all in all she had a very happy, peaceful life. hope this helps!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear you did not get good news at the vets.. but I will say Abigail had a heart murmur when we first got her. We had to keep a close eye on it for several weeks to see if it was getting worse.. hers went away and hasn't been heard of again... I'm hoping yours is minor and will go away on it's own too..

Chances are it's nothing. Seriously. The great majority of murmurs are meaningless in terms of the lifespan and overall health of a typical pet dog. It might cause a breeder to neuter, but only because those problems get worse generation to generation, not because the dog being neutered would have any real health issues because of it.

An echocardiogram should clear up the source of the murmur (if the cardiologist thinks it's warranted). A minor non-aortic valve murmur may be meaningless enough that the cardiologist won't even advise an echo.

Really sorry about the Dx from the vet - please remember that many animals have murmers and MANY grow out of them or are simply not affected in thier everyday life. Please let us know about the hd since he is favoring the leg and it is obviously painful. good vibes!!!!!!!!
