Mia, my boston terrier has just had 5 mast cell tumors removed in the last 3 months and is finishing with her last week of chemo to help slow the recurrence. They suck! The chemo has made Mia pretty lethargic and she has lost 7 lbs (for a 26 lb dog this is pretty dramatic). I am trying to keep her active and eating, but think she will be more normal after the chemo is done. I get so paranoid when I am rubbing her looking for more of these tumors, hopefully it will be a while before we see more of them.

Good Luck with Miss Cookie, you are in my thoughts & prayers.

Poor Mia!! Is she on the vinblastine/prednisone protocol? I'm trying to decide if that's the direction I want to go with Cookie. It will depend partly on what grade the new tumor is. If it's a grade 1 or low grade 2 and completely excised, I probably will just let it ride. If it's worse, I may try the chemo. Unfortunately, because I graduate in just a couple of weeks, I lose my "in" at the vet school. I don't think I would be comfortable administering chemo to my own dog, I'd rather someone with lots of experience do it. If something happened because I didn't set the catheter properly or something I would be devastated. I'll just have to see how it goes.

Thanks for the positive vibes, everyone. Cookie is happy and otherwise healthy.

More bad news :(

Well, I found a lump in Cookie's shoulder on Saturday. I took her to the clinic today and aspirated it, and the cells are malignant. I don't know what kind of cancer it is, other than likely some sort of sarcoma.

She's scheduled for surgery next Tuesday. I won't be doing the surgery, and I'm debating about whether or not I'll stand in on it. Please keep Cookie in your thoughts.
