Good news all around!

Cookie is recovering well from surgery. She has a line of sutures about 6 inches long down her right shoulder, but doesn't act like anything at all is wrong. We're supposed to restrict her exercise a bit, but she's just dying to go for her daily walks, so we're just not walking quite as far, quite as fast.

I talked with the pathologist this morning, and he feels the MCT was a low-grade II, and was completely excised with clean margins of greater than two centimeters all around. While it could still potentially recur, the chances are low.

Right after I talked to the pathologist, I ran into Cookie's oncologist. She said the CT scan looks great, with only scar tissue visible and no signs of tumor regrowth. They want to do another recheck CT scan in 3 to 6 months just to be sure, but for now things are looking up.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. My old gray girl and I really appreciate it :D

An unfortunate setback

Thank you to all who are pulling for Cookie.

Yesterday morning as Cookie and I were getting ready to visit a friend's new Haflinger pony, I felt a small lump on the back of Cookie's neck. It's hidden under her hair, but is hairless and looks kind of like the surface of a strawberry. Because it looks exactly like the mast cell tumor she had removed three weeks ago, there is little doubt in my mind that it is also MCT. I'm going to chat with Cookie's oncologist today. I don't plan to aspirate it, because of the nasty things that happened when the last one was aspirated, I'm just going to have it removed when I get done with classes next week.

My poor girl. I really didn't want to put her through any more surgery, but I absolutely won't leave her with this horrible thing growing on her. I'm disappointed, because I was so confident that we were in the clear, at least for a little while.
