Uncropped ear health

I don't know about the ear cropping thing 'cause as far as I am aware it is illegal/banned by the NZKC (NZ Kennel Club), so I have not actually seen a 'live' boxer with cropped ears. Besides I like those floppy ears especially when Diva sticks them out sideways! (I call it her flying nun ears look!).

A groomer friend of mine has dog ear wash (used in conjunction with cotton wool) and she regularly does her dog and will often do Diva's as well. She has told me that it is easy to do. It keeps the ears clean and stops the wax from building up apparently. And with Diva at the moment spending so much time at a sandy beach it's good to make sure that there isn't a build of sand in the ears.

Sounds like that lady is blowing hot air. Boxers don't have the longest or heaviest ears, so why only crop theirs and a few other breeds, and not those of breeds with the longer, heavier ears? If you look at the dogs whose ears are cropped, most, if not all, are or were fighting/guarding dogs- I think that is probably where you can find the real reason for cropping. People can crop their dogs' ears if they like (at least in the U.S.) but it seems to me that the only reason for it now is cosmetic.

One more thing I forgot to add. In the same conversation with this woman who is randomly breeding boxers, she tell me she wants to get a rescue.

It didn't dawn on me until this morning that she might end up rescuing one of her own pups... Actually, I would hope that a Boxer rescue organization would let her have another.

Cropped Ear MYTH

I guess you could look at it this way...
For a lazy owner, cropping ears would be the way to go HOWEVER I know that no one in Boxer World is a lazy owner. If you check your dogs ears regularly and clean them if they are dirty, then he or she will not shake their head. I would be concerned with the shaking of the head because it could be a symptom of insect infestation (i.e. ear mites).

The only reason to crop a dogs ears are cosmetic.
And aren't all dogs naturally beatiful!

I am here to tell you that cropped ears can get just as dirty inside as uncropped ears (sometimes more so!) - laziness has no place with cropped ears, either. Not to mention the fact that, for the first several months to a year, the aftercare from cropping is very demanding. You could almost say that it is the people who don't crop that are lazy, in that regard

My male was cropped, and I have to agree with a previous poster, his ears were nothing but dirt tunnels. At the time of cropping I was told one benefit to cropping is it would assist in preventing ear infections. Well, he had a lifetime of inner ear infections, so that myth flew out the window. His ears were forever dirty, and eventually we had to use a solution purchased at the vets to clean his ears daily. So, in my experience, cleanliness and health myths are just that a myth.
My female is natural, I do clean her ears regularly but not to the degree I had to do his. Her ears are always pink and healthy looking inside, and (touch wood) in the year + that we have had her, we have not had an ear infection issue.

I do have to agree, cropped ears are for sure NOT for the lazy owner. We put a lot of time and effort into his aftercare for months, and yes a lot of time into keeping them clean. Kailee's ears are a lot less work :D

Hi Everyone!
From my understanding, the ears were traditionally cropped because the original purpose for the boxer was to be used as a hunter. Natural ears were ealily wounded by small prey and became infected as a result. As most of us (I hope!) don't plan on using our doggies as hunters, we don't need to worry about such problems!!
As far as cleaning goes, I got some ear wipes from dog's outfitter.com. They work great, I use them every 2 weeks after Mahn gets his manicure! They make cleaning fast and easy.

Uncropped ear problem

Can I please ask what is the yeast infection in uncropped ears that I am reading about. My 1-1/2 year old white boxer has natural ears and he has developed a scab and a notch first on one ear and now on the other. He does scratch quite a bit and I started to think I was bathing him too much. I treated the one ear with an antibiotic ointment and it seemed to almost heal up when the other ear developed the same notch on the outer edge and it too has a scab. Is this yeast infection the possible cause of this and how should it be treated?
