Hi everyone,
This is kind of hard for me to talk about...but I need to hear from some people who can understand how hard this has been, seeing as how some people dont understand how a pet can mean so much. I am a college student and this is my first year being able to live out of the dorms. I have waited my whole life to be able to get a boxer and so I was super excited when my fiance bought a house, so I would finally have an appropriate place for my dog. I immediately began searching for the perfect puppy. After about a month or two of looking I found him. I named him Tyson and waited impatiently until I could bring him home. I was SO excited. I bought him every toy a dog could have and told anyone who would listen to me about my new puppy. Things were great, Tyson potty trained almost immediately, and loved to cuddle more than any dog I have ever met in my life! I had him for about a month when I brought him in to get his ears cropped. (I know some people dont agree with this but please dont get on my back about it now). I felt I was taking the extra percations to make it painless for him, and it honestly didnt dawn on me anything terrible could happen from it. When I brought him in for his appointment I started crying and I couldnt figure out why. I was picking him up tomorrow morning and I knew it shouldnt have been that big of a deal. Its almost like I knew sometime bad was going to happen. That afternoon I got a call from the doctor. The first thing he said was "Has Tyson been sick, or could he have gotten into any rat poison?" I was really thrown off guard by the question because of course he wasnt sick or gotten into poison...obviously I would have told the vet if he had! The vet then told me that Tyson had a seizure and his heart had stopped. They couldnt revive him. It was like somebody stabbed me in the heart. I did not understand how could this possible happen? Just to clarify I had called that vet while doing research on the procedure and they told me the worst thing that could happen is his ears could not stand up right if they are not taped well. I know it is stupid now, but at the time it never even crossed my mind my puppy could DIE from this stupid procedure. I have never been more devestated in my entire life. I have now found out that there have been other dogs that have died from ear cropping at that same clinic, so essentially they lied to me the entire time. THis is the kicker though, about a month after this whole ordeal I suspected they were still lying about it, so I had my boyfriend call and pretend to be inquiring about getting ears cropped. He asked if dogs can die from it and the lady told him "I have been here a long time and we have never had one." Can you believe they didnt even acknowledge the death of my baby???? It has just been a terrible ordeal and I wanted to come on here to share it in the hopes that maybe it can be prevented for someone else. Please take the time to do more research if you are gonna get this or any procedure done. Get a reputable vet. I wish I could go back and change my mistake but I cant. I just needed to get that off my chest. I feel terribly guilty and I just need some support I guess.
Although I will always love Tyson, I did choose to get a new puppy about three months after he died. My new puppy is named Brinks and he is a big bundle of energy. He is a fancy fawn and is about four month old now. I dont know what I would do without him. Anyways, I am new to this board and I just wanted to say hello and give everyone a little background (and warning) of my experience. SOrry this is so long.....

I am so sorry for the loss of Tyson. You may want to inquire as to what they used for anesthesia...I've read quite a few threads concerning the use of ACE and the effects it has on Boxers in particular. For the vet to even say that it isn't risky for an animal to be put under is ridiculous...there is always a risk and they should have informed you of this. There is no way to replace him but he'll always hold a special place in your heart. Godspeed little Tyson angelicon.

I am so sorry to hear about poor Tyson. Although no one dog can ever replace him, I am sure that little Brinks is helping to fill that void. Take care - Cathy

Thanks for all your supporting messages. After the incident I did learn about ACE however by that time it made me sick to think about those people much less talk to them so I could never bring myself to call and ask what they used. I did file a complaint with my states vet board because of how they lied to me and also some other issue that happened (refused to return money paid for procedure, told my mother they were the only ones that did ear cropping in the area when in fact two other places in the same town did, and some more things like that). I doubt there will be any evidence to do anything about it, but at least they will have a complaint on file for that awful place!

Tyson will forever be in your heart and memories and I am sorry you had to go through this.
I am glad to hear that you were able to get a new boxer puppy to create new memories with.

I would call the vet and ask for a copy of your file, in that file it should tell you all the meds that were used in pre & post op for Tyson.
A lot of vets are UNAWARE of the dangers of ACE and Boxers.

Welcome to the boards, this is a lovely place!! and I hope to hear some of your babies stories soon.

I am so sorry for your horrible experience. Our vet told us long time ago, that if something is not necessary to have to put them under for a procedure, then don't. I have never forgotten this advice. Any time they go under, it could be harmful. I am so sorry that this vet did not explain everything to you. This is so very sad. I hope that you will consider changing vets.

I'm soooo sorry about Tyson!!! I would definately still call the vet and give them a piece of my mind for being so money hungry that they failed to give you the information that you needed to know. I also was determined to have my boxers ears cropped until I heard how horrible it can be for them so I decided that I couldn't handle it and I'm glad I didn't, they are so innocent looking with those floppy ears. You're going to have a blast with your new pup.

Like everyone else, I too am very sorry to hear about your baby, Tyson. My baby is only 2 months and I am already so in love with her that I don't know what I would do if something happened to her. I am also happy to hear that you found Brinks. Good luck with your new baby.

G0 with your gut

thanks again everyone for your supporting message. I actually just got the letter back today from my states Vetrinarians Association. As I expected they couldnt find any proof of any wrongdoing by the Vet who treated Tyson. However it sounded like they did come down to his clinic and actually have face to face questioning with him. This is about all I figured could happen. I was so upset when Tyson first died that I didnt have the right mind to ask for the papers, however my mother did and the doctor made a big fit about giving them to us (he didnt have a copy maching in the office, it would take a while etc). The records were so sloppy it was hard to tell what was written. I brought them to my new vet to look at (who is wonderful) and she could not even determine what was written. My mom eventually called and asked what kind of anesthecia (spell??) was used and they said it was not ACE. Who knows though, they could be lying about that too. After they lied about the cropping deaths I did go in face to face and have some words. I just ended up half yelling half crying but I think I made the woman who answered the phone feel terrible. Get this! I asked her why she lied and her reply was "well right after we got off the phone I asked the doctor what to say when people ask that." WHY DO YOU NEED PERMISSION TO TELL THE TRUTH?????? Basically I had the worst experience possible with who in my mind is the worst vet ever. If know it isnt my fault but if I had listened to my gut this could have been avoided, so my advice to everyone is to listen to what their gut is saying. If you dont feel 100% comfortable with your vet, find a new one!
