I am researching pet insurances for Kit and was wondering if anyone is really pleased with their plan and would recommend it. Thanks!! So far Veterinanry Pet insurance at Petinsurance.com seems to have the best plans/pricing.

Thanks!

Our vet talked us into pet insurance when Tiger (now 2yrs 4 mo) was very small. I NEVER realized how handy it could be until he got hit by the 4 wheeler about a month ago. Our vet bill was $12,000, and we paid a little over $2000. Tiger's well on his way to recovery now. I would have gladly paid the whole amount, but it was a blessing not to have to!!! Our insurance is a private plan through our vet, but I would recommend some type of insurance to EVERYONE!!!

Just enrolled

I just enrolled right now for Veterinary Pet Insurance. It did seem to have pretty good coverage. I've been researching insurance companies for a couple months now. The only bad thing about VPI is that they don't cover hereditary disorders. Alas, I have found that most pet insurance companies put a little "fine print" in there that says they won't cover hereditary disorders. And of course, heart disease, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, etc. can be pretty expensive. So, I went with the slightly cheaper plan because I figured that if I have to pay out of pocket for the chronic disorders, I might as well not pay an arm and leg for a monthly premium. Incidentally, the standard plan has a little less coverage, but still quite respectable, especially for such things like car accidents and odd-ball illnesses. Also, another nice thing is the vaccination/routine care package. You could probably save money by doing the vaccinations yourself at home if you're comfortable with that type of thing, but the plan also includes your choice of comprehensive health exam, spay/neuter, and (my personal fave) dental cleaning. No deductible for the vacc/routine care package either.

LOL, I sound like an infomercial!

Anyways, seems like a good deal. . . I'd rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

Our dogs are covered by petplan insurance. I am quite happy with the plan, the pricing is good and coverage is good. We have had a lot of claims and there hasn't been any problem. My favorite part is that when we had big claims we had them pay the vet directly, means less $ out of my pocket in the short term. I am glad to see that you are looking into petinsurance, it is a great investment. Oh yes, they do cover hereditary diseases as well, when I got my little boston they were going to pay for his ultrasound for his murmur, thankfully the murmur disapeared and we never had to get it done.

Is the Petplan only available in Canada & UK? I tried to get a quote but says my postal code is incorrect.

I am also looking into pet insurance and I think Im going to go with PetCare Insurance. They have a few plans to choose from but I was thinking about going with the 70% coverage for 26.95 a month for a boxer. They don't cover annual exams, but I can bufget for that. They do say they cover all hereditary(sp) diseases which I like the best. That is what can be expensive when they get older. they also have a 100% coverage but its like $50 or $60 a month and with 2 dogs that more than I can afford. I would look into Pet Care Insurance.

I have been looking as well

And I am considering PetCare. I frequent another board (for my Lab ;)) as well, and the PetCare insurance seems to be the ONLY one that will cover hereditary problems . I know they cover hip dysplasia which is a concern for the Lab. God forbid my dogs would get hit by a car or something awful like that. But I also need protection for the other horrible things that can go wrong like cardiomyopathy and cancer. Neither of which would be covered on a couple other plans I looked at. The heart problems would be considered congenital and the cancer would not get reimbursed because boxers have a higher tendency towards cancer. I have heard an assortment of srories but have heard nothing bad about PetCare.

Krysta -

I am in the process of submitting a huge bill for our boxer Kayla's surgery and 10 day hospital stay for an intestinal blockage. We have Veterinanry Pet insurance which costs us $22.50 per month with a double cancer endorsement. We obtained the insurance when Kayla was only 10 weeks old, she is now a year old. I believe the younger the dog or puppy the lower the rate. I will let you know how satisfied I am when I receive notification from the company. They told me it takes about 14 days. From what I've heard from others, the coverage is very good. I'll let you know, I hope it is!
