Hello,
We are about to get our first Boxer in a week. She will start out in her own small kennel until she is housebroken and has taken to the kennel idea. However, we currently have a small English Bulldog (she was bred to be small so she is 35 pounds and full grown already) that we would like to eventually put in a larger kennel with the Boxer. Does anyone have any comments, suggestions, concerns, etc. about the idea of kenneling two different dog breeds in one large kennel? They are both females. They will both be fixed. The kennel is 4 ft. long by 3 ft. tall (in otherwords, the size of a Buick) and used to house our two Bullies together. Any comments would be very helpful.
Thanks
Cheyenne

I don't know if this is a good idea or a bad one. I would not do it just because I have read that dogs veiw the kennel as there den and might become protective of it. But I guess it would depend on the dogs and how well they get along. Good luck with the new boxer!!

I personally think dogs should have a place to call their own, even if they are best of friends, its nice to have a place of their own to get some quiet time when they want it.

Also as they are both females and some times dominance issues can arise between two females as the younger one matures, it would be awful if they got into a fight when you are not home because 2 females can fight to the death in such situation (obviously this is worse case scenario and not the norm) but if they have their own crates then there is no chance of something happening when you are not home to intervene.

But obviously it will depend on the two dogs and what sort of relationship they develop as they grow - it could work out perfectly. I think only time will tell what will work best as their relationship develops.

we had a problem with this when we got our rescue. our other baby buttercup would have anxiety attacks when we were gone and she was in her crate, so when we got the rescue we put her in the crate with her sister with the intentions of buying a second crate-however buttercups anxiety attacks completely stopped!! so we never did buy a second crate, we have the biggest one they make so they both have room to lay down - i mean it is not like they have room to comepletely strech out or anything but they can both lay down and both stand up and they are never left for too long of a time b/c my husband works down the street from our house and comes home for lunch adn right now i am in school so i am not gone a full 8 hrs a day.

i would think it really just depends on your dogs personalities, probably ideally the best thing to do is have 2 crates - but for us it just didn't work out like that.

Hi. I have Joe a 1 year old Boxer and Scampy a 6 month old Boston Terrier. They each have their own crate in the kitchen. However, I always leave their crates open. Many times I find them both asleep in Joe's huge crate. However, when we go out, or at night time, I always put them in their own crate for the above stated reasons. Good luck with your decision.

I would strongly suggest that you see about getting the boxer it's own kennel. Just think about it, you would want your own space wouldn't you. I mean you can test it out, but I think it would be only fair if they had their own spaces.

In our case, crating 2 together was the best option.
Belle was about 10 months old when we brought Copper home. Initially they were crated separately but whined for each other nonstop. Didn't take long before we crated them together because of their intense desire to be together.

Now, our 7 month old boxer pup is crated with our miniature pinscher! what a combination. Similar situation...they're the best of friends, and the minpin has horrible separation anxiety. So again we tried the 2-in-1 crate solution and it worked like a charm.

I think it depends on how well the two dogs interact. If they bond well, prefer to be together, and you have a crate big enough for the 2 of them, then go for it. But if each prefers having his own space, separate crates would be best. Give them a lil while to get used to each other and then you'll be the best judge for whether they should be crated individually or together!

My boxers (both girls) are crated together and have been since about 1 month after Brandy came to us. Before that Britnee and Baylee stayed together. We did have Brandy in a crate by herself for the first month to make sure they could tolerate each other. We found that Brandy had such SEVERE seperation anxiety in her own crate that we would come home and she was sitting in a creek of drool. So, that is when we decided to give it a try. You have to be careful putting 2 females together because they can get in major "bitch" fights. Unfortunately my friend (she had 2 Rotties) found this out first hand. One of her rottie girls tore the other ones ear almost completely off! It was kind of weird because once she got a crate for one and would leave the other one in the basement she would sometimes find both Rotties sleeping together-on top of each other mind you-in the plastic crate when they were home. smashicon nonoicon

SO, you just never know what you are going to end up with putting the two of them together. I would wait until she is integrated into the family and they can handle each other then make the decision if you can do it.

My boxer girls share a crate

Initially, they each had their own crate. When we would come home, we'd find that Eva would move her crate next to ZsaZsa's. Then, it escalated. Eva would pull ZsaZsa's blanket into her crate and their crates would be tangled together. At that point, I worried about their safety and happiness. They are now crated together and happy as can be. It was basically a choice that they made! They are inseparable!
