Trying to decide whether or not to neuter Tyson..poll

I am really hung up on if I want to neuter Tyson or not. He is 4 months old so I still have a little while to go before I have to make a decision. I have researched and read all the pros and cons of both and still can't decide. I don't want him marking territory, humping, or possibly getting testicular cancer, but I like the idea of being able to breed him. He is a very good looking AKC registered lil guy and I had some people in the neighborhood mention breeding him to their female. I'm just stuck as what to do so i'm posting this poll to see the ratio of male boxer owners that have/haven't neutered. Please only vote if you have a male, not your opinion on whether or not I should get him neutered. Post opinions in a reply please.

My male is neutered and I would not have it any other way. I am sure others will elaborate on this but breeding is only to done to better the breed, not just because your Boxer has pretty markings or because others have a female they want bred. Breeding is not to be taken lightly. Even more importantly, there are way too many Boxers (or any dogs for that matter) out there waiting for a home, just lined up in high kill shelters, or just disposed of on the streets. :(

I've done all the research and know about health testing, blood line checks etc etc. I also know that markings and such don't make a good boxer. I'm now just weighing in the pros vs cons of not neutering and if I don't possibly breeding.

Unless your prepared to show Tyson (to get an unbiased opinion if he really is a good representative of the breed), spend about 1000.00 on the proper health screenings & genetic testing, and find a bitch who’s owners have done the same then you shouldn’t breed him. As the other poster said breeding isn’t something to be taken lightly. There are literally thousands of homeless boxers out there because they are being over bred by people who really aren’t knowledgeable enough to be breeding in the 1st place. My local shelter puts down many boxers each year. Why would you want to add to that? There certainly is not a shortage of boxers out there so I feel it’s irresponsible for you to breed.

Also keep in mind your dog does not have all the sexual “hangs ups” that people do. He’s not going to feel inadequate without his testicles and he’s not going to care if he ever has sex or produces a litter. These are human emotions that we project on to our animals. If anything Tyson will benefit emotionally from being neutered. He will not have the hormonal fluctuations that come with being intact. And he will not have to suffer each time he smells a bitch in heat (which he can smell from miles away). Also he’s a lot less likely to runaway/ roam.

Please neuter him.

Ditto the other posters on this thread. Please neuter him, it is best for all involved. Breeding should only come after years and years of experience with a breed in and out of the show ring, not a casual idea because it would be cool or because there happens to be an available intact bitch nearby. For his health's sake and for the sake of all the poor boxers in rescues and put to sleep because of poor breeding, please have Tyson fixed.


FYI AKC registration means squat.... you can register a poodle as a boxer with the AKC and they never know the difference unless someone files a complaint. Just because your boy has papers doesn't mean he is a good breeding specimen. Just take him for the wonderful pet he is and leave the breeding to the experts.

We waited to neuter Baxter until he was 6 years old. I wish we would have just done it as a puppy. He developed some habits like marking his territory on everything and has had some dog aggression issues his whole life. I'm not sure if these were direct causes of him not being neutered, but my vet also told me that un-neutered males are at higher risk for cancer.

Cyrus is getting neutered in about 2 weeks. He is 7 months old right now. Our breeder requires all of her dogs to be spayed/neutered as part of the contract. He had to be neutered by 8 months old, so we have waited until the last minute basically. Unfortunately, he is undescended, so it will be a little bit more intensive surgery for his neuter, but I have been told that in cases where a dog is undescended, it is even more important health wise to neuter them because of a higher cancer rate in unaltered undescended dogs. I would highly suggest neutering your dog. It's the responsible thing to do and is better for the dog behaviorally and for their health. Good luck!

Ditto, Ditto and Ditto. Fix him unless you plan to spend the time and energy to do things the responsible way. Anything less would make you just another Backyard Breeder and we have enough of those.

One more consideration, remember when a female goes into heat a male dog can smell the scent for up to 3 miles. They will do almost anything to find her, including escaping a back yard, running across busy streets and fighting other males. When I was a kid we had a dog named Perkey, little guy, but wasn't neutured and got in a fight with another male while trying to "attract the attention" of a female in heat. He had scaled our back fence and came home with his jaw hanging off. We had to rush him to the vet to get it sewn back on. Think about whether or not the safety of your dog and other dogs is more important than "possibly" breeding him. Most people are not willing to spend the money on proper testing unless they are truely interested in the breed. A good breeder does not make money off of their pups. I vote for the neuter, but I also believe in waiting as long as possible. We just had Buster done at 8 mo., I would have preferred a year but we were afraid he was beginning to get interested in the opposite sex.

Our boy was neutered at 6 months of age because we never intended to show and breed him, and because we didn't want to put him at risk for testicular cancer. I totally agree with what has been previously posted here. For your boy's sake and for the sake of the breed, please neuter him.

neuter him! I have had both my males neutered as puppies.
