I've heard that it is NOT good for them to put ice cubes in their water and that they don't need extra cold water to drink because it can harm them somehow...stomach cramps or something. Can someone clarify it this is fact or fiction?

Where in N. California are you? We are in Albany, near Berkeley... I was a bit worried about Lego last night in his crate... I took a sports bottle and filled it with ice cubes, wrapped it in a cold, wet kitchen towel and stuck it in the crate with him. He was draped over the bottle all night. :)

Last weekend was hot here so I hosed them all down, Casper loves it, Lola & Zeb run  They've ripped their pool from last year(kiddie paddling pool) so I'm waiting for Pets at home to get the dog pools back in stock.

A good trick is to fill old coke bottles (plastic milk ones will do too) with water and freeze them. Dogs will lay on them or snuggle up next to them and will also lick the water off the sides as it condenses there.

We are in Northern CA as well (Sonoma Co) and had a rough night on Thurs. We've had ice cubes, wet towels, playing with the hose - you name it trying to keep my two cool. I had to moved their crates into the kitchen under the ceiling fan for last 2 nights. Finally this morning, it was nice and cool and man did they have energy to burn - boxer burns for 15 minutes straight at 6:15am and now they are crashed on the couch.

in big hot Texas, i also wet a towel with cold water, squize it and lay it flat on the concrete or tiles... they love cooling off on it! :)

Thats a great idea we have air conditioning and only let the dogs out in the day for a quick pee when its hot we also have a lake and a pond and they go in I let them exercise after the sun goes down

Mine like to lie on the tile floor. Even though I have AC, I sometimes run a box fan to keep the air moving around better. Buster likes to lay down and snooze next to it.

anyone in the bakersfield/fresno area? I'm smack dab in the middle of them both...

I have one of the heavy duty fans that make a lot of wind and noise, and you are sure to find my ROcky laying with his rear right in front of it... we also play with the hose alot, only cuz Mom likes to get wet and get the baby wet also...;)

My home in Wilderness Ranch, ID has no central AC but we bought a window unit at Costco for pretty cheap about two years ago for about $150.00. We also have tried misting the dogs with water. Our blinds, closed during the heat of the day help and opening windows at night with fans help. You could also try keeping a big bowl of ice cubes with a fan in front of it to help keep one small room cool. Blow the cool air towards Duke! Does he like splashing in a childs sized pool?
