EUK & IAMS

Ok' I'll add my 2 cents worth. I fed Gidget Iams shortly after I got her, after a short while she stopped eating it. Silly me what do I do, I go out and get a bag of Eukanuba. DUHHHH, I didn't know they wre made by the same company! Well she soon told me she didn't like it either! We are currently feeding Nutro Max Puppy and doing well. She is not a big eater and I'm lucky to get 3 cups a day in her, but she eats it and that is worth a million to me.:)

I switched from Iams to Wellness Super5Mix (after learning about the crap I was feeding my guys here on Boxerworld, thank you all for your insight :D ) It is one of the foods listed in the Whole Dog Journal (do some research on your dog treats as well!) and I couldn't be happier. My guys always had messy poops (we called them soft serves, like the ice cream), horrible gas.. now their coats are noticably softer and shiney, and less poops, more solid poops and less gas.

As Dan mentioned, there are a lot of comparison sites out there. Worth taking a look-see in my opinion.

Innova sounds great and I can get it here in Amarillo!
How much for the bags Dan? Also I have an 18month old pup
And she is currently on Iams large breed puppy.
Does she get Innova puppy or adult?

I, like many, have switched foods since I found boxerworld. I used to feed Purina Kibbles and Chunks. I switched to Nutro Natural Choice a month ago after seeing it on boxerworld. One reason, I recall, the bag said it helps skin and coat. My sheltie has been having skin and coat problems so it was worth a shot. It seems to be working much better! I have never seen Innova here in HI. Only Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro and purina and all the other junk. My husband made a comment the other day, asking why I am feeding generic?!?! I guess cause the bag isn't pretty? WE don't have a Petsmart out here, but we are moving to Tennessee shortly and they do have Petsmart, can't wait!! I miss that store!

We went to our first dog training class last week, and the instructor spent a good part of the time talking about nutrition and how important it is.

She said that Eukanuba is one of the most expensive dog foods on the market, and it really isn't that good...but its still better than the 'grocery store' brands. She said some of the ingredients in those are SAWDUST and PEANUT SHELLS!!!! Of course they don't CALL it sawdust, its "cellulose something".... Can you imagine feeding your dog THAT?

She also said that even though chicken or lamb might be the first ingredient listed, that is BEFORE the extrusion process, and after that's completed, it usually moves down to the 'second' ingredient. Therefore, she told us to look for dog food that has chicken MEAL or lamb MEAL as the first ingredient.

Just food for thought...

Here in Tulsa I pay about $40 per 33lb bag of adult Innova. I switched Maggie to adult food when she was about 8 months old and she's been doing just fine. I do note that it is very rich food and I have to feed Susie somewhat less than Maggie because of her delicate stomach, otherwise she too has "Soft serve" poopie (I loved that description), even with Innova. Maggie does just fine on 3 cups of Innova a day.

Innova isn't for all dogs. But luckily, there are other equally nutritious, good foods available. Wellness, Candadae, and others I can't remember from the Whole Dog Catalogue.

I've got Boomer on Wellness Super 5 Mix Chicken food, and he's doing quite well ($34 for 30 lb. bag). His coat is much glossier than it was a month ago, and there is no more Dairy Queen poopie (aka soft serve)! He's now up to six cups a day with a little water mixed in. Hopefully he'll soon realize that there will always be food for him, and he'll learn to eat slower.

When we were working on the switch from Science Diet to Wellness, I noticed that he would pick out his new food, and leave the SD behind

How about Pedigree?

Hi to all,

Since you all mentioned that Eukanuba is not advisable, but how about Pedigree's dog food? I am now feeding my puppy with this and would like to hear some advices on this matter, thank you.

I looked up Pedigree Performance, since I think that's their "top of the line" food, and I'm sorry to say that I'd consider this a worse food than Eukanuba.

The first three ingredients are Ground Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, and Corn Gluten Meal. That means the food is mostly corn (grain) which is simply a filler, no nutritional value to the dog at all. It also contains Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT) - BHA & BHT are known carcinogens.

I posted this link earlier, but since this thread has gotten so long I'll post it again ;) This is the Animal Protection Institute's article, "What's Really in Pet Food?" which explains what the terms "by-products," "meal," "digest," etc. mean.

agree with the last one!

Yeah.... check out some of the other threads about various feeding methods available & look on the web for information on what is in dog feed..... Then do the cost comparisons & what it means for your best buddy.

We are in the process of switching from Premium to what I would call a "Super-premium". My dog gains weight quickly, it seems (or else we just want to pamper him too much! Or else he's been finding goodies out in the forest that I don't know about!!!!) so I want a food that is the highest quality that I can get, with the convenience of kibble. We still mix in a couple of tablespoons of soft canned food, just to get him to eat the kibble.... but the new stuff he will eat dry. It is fresher & better tasting to him, I guess! I am glad. It is costing me enough!

I, too, think that my dog eats better than me..... And he STILL wanted that salmon off of the BBQ!!! Augh!
