Toe Nails

I was wondering what everyone recommended as far as how long you let your boxers' toe nails get and how short you cut them... It seems that Peyton's toe nails grow soooo fast and I don't want to cut them too much but I don't want them to get too long.

Mabye it is because we have ceramic tile and they file their own nails down, but I have never had to trim their nails. :confused:

My suggestion is to have them done professionally, then when they grow you can see where they should be cut to by the way they will grow, hard to put into words but you will be able to tell the new growth. We trim mason and aspen's nails every 3 weeks or so and then get them done professionally twice a year when they get their baths at the groomers.

We cut them farily often every 3-4 weeks or so. I don't like them to get very long and cut them just before you get to the quick. We are lucky because both of ours have white nails and it is easy to see the quick. Deuce has 2 black nails and those always make me nervous so I just take my time and sometimes have to cut twice. It does seem like that is really frequent, buy hey, we have boxers so its not like we have to do much in the grooming department so I won't complain. Someone once told me that if you keep the nails cut short when they are a puppy, it will keep the quick from getting really long so the nail won't be really long. Plus the one time I let Maggie's nail get long she ended up getting a split nail and it was painful for her so I don't let that slip anymore.

When Foreman was a puppy we were told by our vet every 14 days when he's a pup now we do them once a month

I try to trim my two every 2 or 3 weeks. They both have all white nails so it's easy to see the quick. I try not to quick them, but it has happened. Get some of the powder stuff that's made for that purpose (not sure of the name). It stops the bleeding pretty fast.

the one time I let Maggie's nail get long she ended up getting a split nail and it was painful for her so I don't let that slip anymore.

Sprout HATES getting her nails done, we get them done by a vet or groomer. One time sprout refused to let anyone do it, her nails got long and split too.

I cut Alex's nails about once a month through the winter. Luckily, I can see by the divets in the carpet when it's time to cut them. I cut them when she is napping/sleeping and she watches me through one eye. If I go at her with the cutters when she isn't relaxed, she puts up a little fight. She doesn't need them done as often in the summer as she is outside more. If you're nervous, just cut a little bit off and see how that goes. Play with the paw area even when you aren't cutting to get them used to your hands on that area. Alex is older now (over 10 years) so she is pretty much used to it. I remember when she was really young, she would always try and pull her paw away just before I was ready to snip!!!!!

This may not be necessary for this crowd -- we are all Boxer nuts and don't skimp on things for the furkids -- I recommend getting good, solid clippers. Don't bother with the cheap plastic handled clippers. You want something with a little heft. They are a bit more expensive but definitely worth it.

Our groomer does Fletcher's nails and he sees the groomer on average once every two months.
