To rescue or to buy. That is the question

My rescue boy, Duke, died after a heartbreaking battle with cancer last October - I still miss him terribly and even cry sometimes when I think about him. I knew I wanted another boxer, but was really torn between getting a puppy or rescuing again. For us, it came down to several factors, including me being a little wounded from the cancer ordeal, and being ready, willing and able for a puppy. Now we have our darling little Rex, who has already stolen our hearts. A puppy is a LOT of work, but we are patient and know the hard work will be worth it. On the other hand, Duke came into my life and was an angel from day one. How anyone could have abandoned a dog as wonderful as him still puzzles me to this day. I am very glad my first boxer was a rescue, and would do it again in a second. I also am thrilled with having a puppy now. Both are very different and equally wonderful, rewarding situations. Good luck!

Agreed - no matter what you do, if you decide to go the puppy route, do your homework and buy from a reputable breeder.

Of course there are scary rescue stories but there are also scary stories of dogs people got when they are puppies, but these situations are not the norm. Most good rescue groups evaluate the dogs so that they and the potential adoptee know of any behavior problems if there are any.

Our first boxer we got as a pup, he is now at the bridge and our 2 boxers now are both rescues. One we got at 20 months old the other at 2.5 years old. With us both working getting a puppy this time was just not an option. Most older dogs are house broken and if your lucky know some basic good manners already.

With so many unwanted homeless dogs out there I would recommend a rescue. And like others have suggested if you do go with a puppy make sure its a reputable breeder and don't support the puppy mill chain :)

Good luck with your decision either way I am sure you will be happy.

i guess this differ from a persons preference. i personally want a puppy that way i can watch him/her grow knowing i gave the best for him/her. i read a lot of great stories about boxer who have been rescued and most people said it turned great for them. maybe someday i'll go to that route but for now i still prefer to get a puppy over rescue.

VTbxrFan exaplained it exactly the way I feel about it as well but don't have the time to type all that out (supposed to be working =)) I think both have their merits when done the right way and both suport the breed. Those puppies who find loving forever homes as babies are just lucky not to have to go through the bad parts that some rescues do before they find their forever homes. They are just as in need of loving homes. I have an older dog I got from a breeder (breeding bitch who had too much trouble with her litter and was not bred again) and a puppy. I would love to rescue as well. I support both.

Which have you found to be a blessing? What do you think shows the most support to the breed if either more than the other? Are ther any scarry boxer rescue stories or do they all turn out great in general?

Well, it shows support for the breed to rescue the ones without homes instead of letting them die while we buy.......

All of my rescues have been immeasurable blessings. There is nothing as touching as saving a boxer's life and receiving all that typical boxer love and then some. They are so emotionally in tune, that rescues know you have saved their lives.

I have adopted and fostered and must say I have no reason to buy when there are boxers who need saving.

The four worst boxer stories I have ever heard were from people who bought: one a show prospect who died young of a genetic disease, two from newspapers who are the picture of every boxer problem and poor conformation fault known to the breed, and a fourth from a pet shop which suffers constantly from health problems.

I think by week's end, our rescue will receive about a dozen young, good-looking boxers who are in desperate need of a foster home and then a forever home. That's in addition to the 30+ we currently have. We are waiting for people to pitch in and offer to foster so we can save these additional dozen. There are just so many in need.

Rescue!!

I have 2, one from a breeder, and the other a rescue (white one). From now on, I plan on getting rescued dogs only. Although I adore both of my dogs, my rescue has a sweeter disposition. It's almost like he knows we saved his life and he doesn't have to worry about anything anymore.

Good luck!

I may be in the minority but we declined to rescue only because we have small animals (parrot & cats) and wanted to make sure that the dog would be well socialized. I found out later that the rescue in our area does not advertise that there are puppies available--to give the older dogs a chance.

Also, I've lost several dogs very young to heredity issues. I really needed to know that our puppies parents were health tested. Also wanted to see them for personality reasons. I gave my grandmother a dog that had been adopted only to find out that he should have been destroyed--he liked to bite.

rescue

rescue is the only way for me they give you so much love back because they know you have saved them for the he!! they have been through. With rescue they are test and you know what your are getting they are looking to place a dog forever so they work very hard to find perfect matches. With rescue they are house broken most of the time. Capone is very mello fello he has ever damaged anything in my house. He is so well behaved that he go with us everywhere. Next rescue will be a senor for me they really tug on my heart strings.
