To Rescue Again... (long)

As many of you might already know, in the past year I have had two rescue babys and I have lost them both, Gertie to cancer after 3 months and Snubby to heart problems after 9 months.

As I am sure many others have done, when Snubby died so suddenly, I swore I couldn't do it again, but within a week, my mind took back over from my heart to realize there are so many more babys out there that need a good home, the kind I know I can provide.

Some of you may also know my grandmother is sick, that story is posted elsewhere. I had decided to wait, in the best interest of the new dog, until after she got out of the hospital (short story, she needs a bone marrow transplant). Since her hospitalization has now been postponed, she does not want me to wait any longer, b/c we don't know how long it will be, she wants me to go ahead and get another dog.

So, now to my point. I personally do not want a puppy from a breeder, I want a rescue, but I find myself now terrified. I know that I did everything I could for both my girls and their leaving for the bridge was no fault of my own. I know that I gave them the best life I could, filled with love and toys and all the things they loved. But I still find myself feeling like, it is me, that if I take in other dog, they are going to die simply because I took them in, like I am jinxed. I know this sounds ridiculous, but the thought of losing another within a short period seems unbearable.

I guess I am looking for some encouragement; do my feelings mean I am not ready for another one? I want to give a new life to another awesome boxer; I miss the boxer antics and sharing my life and love with a dog, I am just scared of losing another too quickly. This almost sounds crazy, but even if I could just have a baby that lives, even a year.

Thanks for listening you guys!

You're an angel April. You're the reason that Rescue workers and volunteers do what they do. What happened to your other rescues was not your fault.

Thank you for rescueing. There aren't enough people like you in the world:)

I've lost one boxer in 14 years I can't imagine how it must have been for your losing 2 in such a short space of time - you loved & looked after them and gave them a home, what more could you have done? I suppose with any puppy/dog you have no idea how long they will be with you for and on a more positive note our Sophie was a rescue and is almost 11. I think you should go for it, you know boxers, you have a loving home and there will one out there that needs you and will love you back :)

I would think the odds are way in your favor now that the next rescue would have a much longer life!

We adopted Jazz about 3 years ago, and she has (fortunately) been a very healthy girl once she was backup to the right weight. I hope you'll take the chance, but I can see why you would be extra cautious!

Even if you did get a puppy this time, you could still rescue another boxer down the road as well. I love having more than one in the house.

I can certainly understand your trepidation because loosing one, let alone 2 is a heart breaking experience. But by rescuing Gertie and Snubby you made the time that they were with you a safe and loving environment for them that they might not have had if you hadn't brought them to live with you. And I think the 2 of them would be quite pleased if you were able to give that same love to another poor soul.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words. Pretty much right after I got that off my chest, I emailed the rescue and told them I was ready. They already got back to me and the search has started. I have to admit, I am excited. My fingers are crossed, I know the right one will find me.

After all the heartbreak you have suffered, I think the fact that your are even considering rescue again speaks volumes about where your heart truly lies.

I am glad you decided to rescue again the difference you made in the other 2 rescues before they passed was so rewarding, I have the motto better to have loved and lost then never loved. Even if we don't rescue anything could happen to a non rescue too. Good Luck I hope they find a boxer for you soon.
