To crop or not to crop?

That's the question I have been struggling with the past couple days.. My little guy has an appointment to be cropped next week (he'll be 12weeks).. I am waffling.. I love the regal look of the cropped dog and would prefer it.. I have had a couple questions of what mix he is (and a suggestion he'd look like a mutt if not cropped) and had some old timers convice me that a Boxer needs to be cropped.. I know there are opinions out there.. any help? How much upkeep is the cropped ear? Can A puppy be a rough housing little puppy once the ears are cropped and in tape? What's the experience with time until tape is off?

Thanks in advance for the input.. This has put a knot in my stomach..

I guess I would be in the "old-timer" category. :D ;) :D A boxer does not have to be cropped to look like a boxer. I personally do crop my guys and like the look. However, it is a lot of work and can sometimes take 9-10 months of taping. Rarely, ears will never stand correctly, but most do if you have someone helping who knows what they are doing. My puppies will be playing within 4-6 hours after the surgery and usually have no problems.

To be honest, if you are nervous and your baby may be a mix, I think I would pass. If the pup is mixed with a breed with a heavy ear, they may be hard and maybe impossible, to get to stand. The ears should be a very thin leather. A thick heavy leather is much harder to get up.

Right now I have a six month old pup who is still in tapes. She was easy to spot at the recent Washington Regional shows. She was the one with one ear up and one ear down, but mostly with both ears down. Hers will come up, but it may take several more months of taping.

I would pass on it especially if it is a mix. It is a lot of work to get them standing correctly and at 12 weeks you already are at a disadvantage. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I am of the "don't crop" camp...based on experience. This is a change for me.

When I had my first boxer, Annie, I just KNEW that it was very important to have the ears cropped. To me a boxer did not look like a boxer if the ears were down. Besides, even though she was white, Annie came from strong champion bloodlines..so she must be cropped for her "perfect show appearance." And yes, I had her ears cropped. They turned out good. We had the show cut, and after a few months, her ears stood good. The operation consisted of cutting the ears, and then followup taping. Initially she had to wear an e-collar (inverted cone so she couldn't get to the ears...she also had a tough time getting to anything!). Then tape was put on her ears, taken off daily, and reput on. Without it, the ears flopped miserably. Periodically blood came from the wounds, but it soon dried up. I felt no pain, so I assumed everything went well.

Annie died this past January. As part of my grieving process, I put all of the pictures of her into a photo album. When I looked at the pictures of her ear cropping and pictures of her with the e-collar on, the look on her face broke my heart. You see, at the end of her life, she also had an e-collar to prevent her from puling out the IV needle. Not only did I remember the pain from the end of her life, but I now saw that in the puppy pictures, she also had that same look of pain and discomfort. I then realized that ear cropping was only done for one reason...because I liked it. Annie didn't. It didn't mean she heard better. It meant nothing to her but pain. I switched from thinking "mandatory cropping" to "no cropping".

When I looked for the boxer I have now, I knew that I must like him or her as she was. Certain types looked better to me uncropped...all fawn with black face for one. No dog needed to go throgh cosmetic ear surgery for my personal likes. And so, the decision was made for me, because we got Emma at nine months old...not cropped and too old to have it done. I liked how she looked ...as she was. She is a brindle and white with a black mask. No change was necessary. She looks good, but most importantly, she has a sweet personality.

Now when I look at boxers, I prefer the non-cropped look. The "regal" look is now replaced by the natural look. The boxer appears more aerodynamic and powerful. The ears down calls greater attention to the trim elegant body shape of a boxer ...in my opinion. I have come to realize that we like a look because we expect a look. Ear cropping is slowly going out of style. I believe that in the next decade or two, the AKC will also not require it on show dogs.

Just my personal opinion.

Good luck with your decision. It's a hard decision to make and it's ultimately yours.

I'm getting the impression that the OP doesn't actually own a mix but other people who don't know the dog think it is a mix because the ears are natural. In that case, get used to it. You will find many threads here about lay people confusing our Boxers for all kinds of other purebreeds, even a Jack Russell! It happens and I always try to be upbeat and educate them one at a time. :)

As far as the ears go, I would leave them. It really hurts and the upkeep is more than most people are willing to do. I think they look beautiful with their ears natural and they are very expressive.

Funny, I have friends who can't tell Boxers from "that other breed" when they are cropped! People will always get the breed wrong anyway, there are oodles of rant threads about it! :)
Floppy for me! I saw a miserable pup that had been cropped around the time we got Diesel and I think the ears look beautiful when cropped correctly but after seeing that puppy's face and the fresh stitches! No thanks! Plus I hate to be reminded everytime I look at my dogs face weather or not i'm keeping up on grroming, You can really see when you need to clean those ears!

Well, we have one of each.

Hoss came to us at 5 months age with his ears cropped and still needing posting and wraps. His ear leather is fairly heavy, and the crop is a long show style one. Long story short, I tried and tried (even enlisted the help of a breeder friend who has been showing/breeding boxers for many years) to get the "lazier" ear to stand to match the properly standing one, at 15 months of age I finally GAVE UP posting/taping. He has one nice cropped ear, and one goofy one that breaks and flops forward in the middle. On a rare occasion, it will pop up for a few seconds.

So, like a lot of others said, it boils down to personal preference, but just be aware that there are no guarantees.
