Both mine are natural...I love the expressions in addition to the eyes..it is personal and I love playing with them..they say after you crop they really don't like you messing with them..again personal reasons for cropping...I chose not to!

I feel the same way. Look at my avatar or in my gallery for all the comments I make on Sam's ears. I could never change them - they hold too much of his personality for me. But again, it IS a personal choice. To each his own, right?

My girl just loves a good ear rub! There are many things I had preconceived notions about that have turned out to be untrue. As for expressiveness, they aren't cast in stone they move back when she's been naughty, sideways to tune into an interesting sound and straight up when she's focused on me and at attention. I find them very expressive!

It's really important to separate fact from fiction because in the very end, boxers are beautiful and expressive whether their ears are natural or cropped. I love natural ears, my first boxer was natural and my next boxer will be natural as well. My girl is cropped because she is a prospect and my breeder will be showing her. Although I know that the standard has been revised, the reality is that classics are a challenge in the AKC and when uncropped even more so. It will not change until more naturals enter and win and that is why if I ever have the opportunity to own a show prospect in the future I will not crop.

Most of us have docked pups and in some countries that is frowned upon as well. There are convincing arguments for keeping a boxer's tail as well and perhaps one day we will see our standard revised to allow a natural tail. But in the end, the original "look" of the boxer was cropped and docked and there are many who would prefer to keep it that way. Whatever the case, we should respect each other's opinions and decisions and not base criticism on mere assumptions. Please remember that it doesn't mean we love our pups any less.

Lisa, I agree with everything you have said, and if more people with natural ears enter the show ring, then the chances for natural ears doing well will increase. You said your next show prospect you would leave natural. Is this because your breeder insisted this time ?or did you chose to crop because of showing your pup. I chose to keep natural in hopes that in 2 years he may be accepted by the judges. At least let them be judged both natural and cropped, equally. My breeder is supporting helping, and encouraging this.
( Even though she cropped his brother to show)
Good luck to your puppy- If my baby is looking good we may see you there.

Ellen, It's so very complicated and in the end, it all comes down to the judge's preference. While the standard allows for the natural ear, I would imagine it may take time for a judge's particular preference to follow suit. Just as some judges prefer and give priority to certain characteristics and qualities, when it comes down to deciding between 2 boxers who both meet the standard, they will choose the one that fits their sylistic interpretation of what's "ideal". As much as there is a standard to follow closely, it's very subjective in the end.

It's much more challenging to champion a classic just as it's more challenging to champion a natural ear. For now (and I do hope this is temporary) you've doubled the challenge to champion a classic, natural eared boxer in the AKC. As for Goldie, this is part of my agreement with the breeder and after careful consideration we decided we wanted her to have the best opportunity to point. There is a real possibility that she may not do well or perhaps not even enjoy the ring and then the rationale for the crop will have been for naught. However, only time will tell. In the meantime, I do believe there is a nostalgic quality to a classic, cropped, docked boxer.

When and if I ever decide to show another boxer, hopefully I will have more experience having worked with my breeder who will show my girl. By then the judges will have adjusted to the new standards and the ears will no longer hold so much power either way. I probably would choose a prospect that is flashy and easier to champion as well. And I won't crop again not because the experience was terrible but because I will choose not to.

Like I said, I think boxers are beautiful whether they are cropped or natural ;) Mostly I responded to this thread because I think that sometimes in our zeal to champion one choice over the other, we can be hurtful and make assumptions that are simply not fact.

I too have had all sorts of comments about my dogs' natural ears. I like the look both ways. The rudest comment that I got a petsmart about the ears I replied (rather loudly)--that my first(the family dog growing up) boxer nearly died during the cropping surgery so I decided against having mine done for that reason. Even after Violet had the end of one of hers nipped off by a golden--I still refused when the vet said he could do a show crop on her.

I agree with the comments-----so when are you going to have a nose job , your teeth fixed or lipo. It's just no one else's business .period.

Out of the loop.

I am so intrigued by everyones views. I am constantly looking at everyones pictures of cropped babies as Ive never ever seen a cropped baby. In Australia I dont think they crop at all (i cant be certain for show pups). It is now also illegal in most areas to dock and I've never been informed about declawing either!
Dakoda is all natural and we have had comments about her tail, one cousin even suggested if he got a dog he'd dock it himself because "dogs with tails look funny". When I informed him of it being illegal and the vet would dob him in he replied by saying "why would I take a dog to a vet?"(Luckily he lives far away and has been crossed off my wedding list!Or I may have docked HIM myself)
If Dakoda had been docked we'd never have known she has a white tip to match her socks. But I must admit her tail is lethal when its wagging at high speed, I'm sure its going to fly off one day.

No, they don't crop in Australia. It has been illegal there for over a century.
