Throws up undigested food: This seems to be a common problem, but no one really has an answer. I recently rescued a young boxer. He had kennel cough (we think, but the vet didn't confirm that it was kennel cough since his vitals, lungs, etc. looked good) when we got him home, lots of vomit, mucus, runny nose, and the runs. He has since been a lot better, but once in a while he throws up undigested food (couple min after eating) or white foam (when nothing is in his tummy). His poo looks good and he acts normal. I am feeding him Nutro for puppies (he was severly under weight) and am in the process of slowly switching him over to Nutro Max. A lot of others have posted similar cases, but does anyone have a better understanding of this problem as well as solutions? I have seen posts that we should feed him treats at night, yougart with his meal, or three times a day with smaller portions. Any insight is appreciated! Thanks in advance! BTW: The FLBR group is awesome, very helpful and friendly.

puke!!!

this is the name we call my boxer ali.He also throws up food and he even does this sometimes while he is eating!!!also the white foam is a fun factor to through in the mix of gross things that can come out of a dog. My boxer has bad allergies and is on shots but I dont know why he does this but we have found a soultion!!! If you feed him in 2 smaller amounts of food (about half the normal amount) and do this about 30 minutes to an hour apart, that might help your pup. the white foam we found was from him eating things he should not be. like whole bars of soap!!!! he prefers irish spring but anything will do!!! ( we have since removed the bars of soap from doggy reach.)
hope the idea works for you!!!

It sounds like your boxer has Inflammatory Bowel Disease, vets cannot diagnose it through blood tests or xrays, they will always come back negative. I have a 7 Yr old male boxer who just had surgey and biopsies to diagnose it, my vet for over a year was treating it as acid reflux disease, but as soon as he was off his medication he would act up again. Your boxer is having the same symptoms as Blitz. I suggest you request your vet to take a biopsy. Keep in touch. If you have any questions you can email me at xxxxxx. Good Luck

If he is throwing up right after eating, it could be that he just eating too fast. Does he eat really quickly? You could try putting a large ball or rock in his bowl and then he has to work a little harder to get his food and it slows him down.

If he is throwing up the white foam, it is because he is hungry. You can try giving him his dinner a little later and a good snack before bed will really help.

Good luck with your boxer! :)

Hi!
Did you rescue him yourself or adopt him?
If you adopted him, was he in foster care and did this happen then? I am wondering if we can link it to something in his food.

I am thinking many things, some have been mentioned...
For the throwing up right after eating:
-eating too fast, Jan gave a great solution for that
-food sensitivity/intolerance to an ingredient (I wouldn't feed anything by Nutro) - try something like California Natural or Wellness Fish and Potatoes to cut out some of the excess ingredients that could cause upset. Vets sell a hypoallergenic food that has protein broken down so that it does not cause intolerances. If that works, then it was a food intolerance which can trigger IBD. Sometimes grains are the culprit or it's a protein source intolerance.
-does he eat within an hour of any play? This sometimes happens with young boxers.

I dealt with the throwing up of foam in the night when I fed kibble too. Three meals - the third smaller one before bedtime or a snack will alleviate this problem.

Let us know if the food switch and bedtime snack help.
Hoping you find the answer soon!

Throwing up/regurgitation

Chaos used to "throw up" or as the vet calls it regurgitation, (lots of slimy phlem with bits of food) he has megaesphhagus.
I have elevated his food and water, (put his bowls on plant stands, they look like flying saucers!!) He also has myasthenia gravis which is rare but the megaesophagus isn't. I also soften his food and he hasn't "thrown up" since he did it all over the place at our last 4th of July party!!

Clyde did this as well when he first moved in with us. Frankly he scarfed down his food so fast that he either didn't chew or he didn't know how to chew. I tend to lean towards the latter.

What I did was, I soaked his food in water, basically making it soft enough not to need chewing, then over time (about a 2 to 3 week period) I soaked it less and less, getting him back to eating kibble as is. Because it was soaked, he had to slow down and actually lap up the food, no vomitting. As I increased the texture, he lapped but also stopped to chew the harder lumps, no vomitting. I am happy to say, that once we got him onto kibble as is, the vomitting stopped.

I don't believe it was actual vomit, it was the fact that he inhaled his food whole and some of it came back up, intact and unchewed. A year later and still no episodes.
I since learned (within the past month) that yes, Clyde was on a diet of the moister kibbles and supper left overs from the human table so he basically did not know how to chew. Heck he didn't even know at that time how to chew dog biscuits etc. He would take it, but then look at me with a look of confusion as to what it was. He knows now what they are :)

Our white boxer used to do this a lot and we finally figured out he was allergic to something in the food.. There are a lot of non-allergenic foods out there. We now use Pro Plan sensitive stomach and skin and he doesn't throw up anymore, it seemed to be directly related the regular food we fed him.

Rocky did this and I discovered he was allergic to corn products in the food. If you do a search on corn and allergies you should be able to pull up some info and see if it's similar to what your baby is doing. :)

Throwing up undigested food.

Fenway was doing this as well. We have tried so many things. Rice and low-fat cottage cheese diet. That was a real nightmare. I decided to stop and try a non-allergenic food. We are on Wellness puppy and things were going great for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, the throwing up has started again. I did hear that you can have a skin test done to find out what the allergies are. My vet never offered this to me. Let me know what you find out about your dog.

Thanks.
